smith & wesson 317 accurate?

22FOREVER

I have a 317 with the hi-viz sites. It shot right so I moved rear site left, all the way. It still shoots right. Should I send it back. It is not real bad, but not good either. What to do??

Have you shot it off a bench or let someone else shoot it yet? Have you tried different ammo? What distance were you shooting at? I'd cut out all the variables before I sent it out.

Are your groups tight or somewhat scattered. I would buy some snap caps and dry fire some and see if you get on center. When I shot on several Marine Corps rifles and pistol teams I snapped in this way. I put a kitchen chair, back facing me, about ten feet from a blank white wall with no targer. No target because you are going to practice sight alignment, trigger control and grip. Take your time and use the chair as firing line bench. Get a firm grip and raise the pistol and align the sights. When you release the trigger you will see the sights move if you are jerking the trigger.

Check to make sure your barrel isn't canted - S&W likes to release revolvers with fun little 'features' like that these days.

I didnt have much luck with the v notch rear sight, couldn't get a consistent sight picture. I swapped in a standard u notch rear and it was a much better shooter.

Also a lighter rebound spring will do wonders for the trigger pull. With such a light gun, I found it moved a lot with the stock trigger.

I had one that didn't shoot worth a schit. I never could get it to shoot low enough. Sent it back - they said they adjusted it, but no change in my eyes. It also spit powder...sent it back for that also - they fixed most of the spitting, but not all. I still couldn't shoot decent groups with it, and I'm a competition shooter, so I sold it at a substantial loss to a dealer at a gunshow.

well, after setting up seven yard target, bench rest, the gun still shot 2.5 to 3 inches right. site already moved so far it looked bad. sent it back for s&w doctors to cure. will report when it comes back.

received gun today, quick service. only had time for a few shots but seems problem is cured. site is centered and gun hit center of aim. HATS OFF TO SMITH & WESSON for fast great service and support. Could not ask for more. They paid shipping both ways and shipped by to my house. thanks again S & W.
