Hi all
I am thinking of buying a new smith model 617, 4 in barrell, 10 shot. The price i am quoted is $425.
Does anyone have any experience with this model ? I love .22,s and dont have a revolver so i figured i would get some input before i made a final move. Is it a good target gun, etc.etc.
Any input would be appreciated.

The price is right. Here in vegas we have a place that sells firearms at cost. Its true cause in november i bought a Beretta 9000 for $410.
Thanks for posting the article on how to check out revolvers though, i appreciate it.

I recently bought a new (but no lock) 4" 617 10 shot. I love it and it is fast becoming a favorite especially because I can shoot it all day at $8 per 550 rounds (Walmart). After looking around I felt the $469 I paid was fair. Just check the timing before you buy. The first one I found, new from factory, had the timing off. Nice balance and trigger is getting smooth. Great gun! Not too worried about the MIM parts because it is not for defense and comes with a life time guarantee. Accuracy equal to my Ruger 512 target.

I have a Model 17(same thing, only blue). The stainless is probably easier to keep clean.I use it often because I also shoot a Model 16 in a regular match--My .22 is a practice gun that I don't have to load for.One thing you might like to consider is the cylinder capacity.I deliberately chose the 6 round mag because that was the same capacity as my service gun.

Stay away from the aluminum cylinder. My buddy has one and it's a POS.
If it has a stainless steel cylinder, it's probably a good gun, but check it out carefully because S&W has been putting out some junk lately.

At that price, I'm assuming you're looking at a used gun. That's good. That way none of your money goes to S&W.

Be sure to read the thread link Sam posted. There is some very good advice there.

Good luck.

The price is for a new 617 not a used one. I have heard all these things about Smith putting out guns that are less than spectacular lately, im just hoping they arent all true.
I was also looking at a Taurus 94 i beleive the model is. Its a 9 shot .22 revolver. Anyone hear anything about this ??

Smith definately has Taurus beat. If the price you quoted is for new, jump on it, here they are selling for $540.00...
