smith model 28-2 need a 6 in barrel

I have a highway patrolman that I'd like to switch to a 6 in barrel so that I can pass it along to my son.[ canadian eh! ]
I cant seem to get the barrel off......
I've changed the barrel on my smith mod 19 and it seemed like pretty much the same exercise,remove the lock pin and unscrew it, but without getting really nasty it doesn't want to co'operate.
Any thoughts? Thanks

and you are likely to booger it up messing with it. if the barrel is tight it needs a fitted frame wrench. there have been a lot of barrels unscrewed with a hammer handle through the frame but if the barrel is tight you can bend the receiver without much trouble. get a pro.
 
Hmmm... it shouldn't be any problem. It has fairly fine thread (a lot of engagement) but Jim is right about a frame wrench. I've done it with a block of wood but never had any problem. Yours, apparently, has something else going on.

Could you have damaged the barrel threads when you drove out the pin? You know, moved a little metal so that it is more difficult that usual to remove it.

By the way... I use a real barrel vise. What are you using?
 
I dont think that I hurt anything taking the pin out.I used a pin puch ,the proper size..I'm a mechanic who happens to like to shoot so I had it in a bench vice with the barrel wraped in rags[I know,I know]
I'm probably just not turning hard enough but I didnt want to damage the reciever. The only other one that I did broke free with less pressure than I put on this one.

Thanks for your input guys,I guess I'll have to find a frame wrench,I tried it again and it wont budge........
 
Just a question here... for a frame "wrench", could a guy not use a couple of blocks of, say, maple or walnut to clamp the frame in a bench vise? I don't have a revolver handy, but I seem to recall the sides being parallel and flat, except for the cylinder release and such.

Just curious.
 
Not really DBotkin. The old Model 28 doesn't have perfectly flat sides... especially around the barrel... at least mine doesn't.

The frame wrench should really be inlet (at least partially) into hardwood blocks that are fairly thick. The 'wrench' should be flat jawed and completely cover the wood blocks. I have an old plumbers wrench that does not have any serrations cut into the jaws and I believe that it might be what you need to look for. The serrations in a standard plumers wrench might crack the wood.
