First thread be kind, i have a model 10-5 with a 2'' barrel. The serial number i found is stamped on the bottom of the frame and on the hinge under the model number. The question is, i have heard that smith and wesson never made a model 10 with only 5 numbers in the s/n and no letters. Why then does this gun have only 5 digits in the serial numer? I have pics but dont see any way to upload them. Anyone?

mud,

The S/N is on the bottom of the grip frame. Depending on the type of stocks, you may have to remove same to access the number. Is that the number you reference?

Are you certain there is no D prefix? There may be a wide space between the letter and the numerical serial on the butt.

Pre-1982 letter-prefixed Smiths can be found with 1-to-5 digit serial numbers. S&W did not show the preceding zeroes; i.e. the D prefix serial numbers start with D1 rather than D000001, and so on for D10-D99, D100-D999, etc. (same goes for the C prefix). Many S&W enthusiasts don't realize this because relatively few Model 10s exist with serial numbers under 6 digits. IIRC someone on the S&W forum owns Model 10 s/n C8, and I once saw Model 34 s/n M2x in a gun store, and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.

If there's no letter prefix, something weird is going on.

That is not the original serial number. Someone other than the factory applied it. The butt appears to have been ground down along with the original serial number and someone restamped (poorly I might add) the assembly number from the yoke assembly.

Not good...

jim, thanks for the help, i thought it looked strange the way the numbers were stamped, and would explain the oversized grips.
