Smith Mod 10 Problem

My brother took his Mod 10 apart to clean. He reassembled forgetting the cylinder release pin. Now he can't get the cylinder open. Any ideas guys?? he sent me this picture.

Cylinder center pin. OK, it pushes the front locking bolt in, thereby allowing the cylinder to be pushed out from the frame. I'd remove the lockwork to prevent any damage. Then mount the frame (lower portion) such that the cylinder is accessible. Place a block of wood against the cylinder and tap it with a mallet.

Most of the time it's really not necessary to disassemble a gun to clean it sufficiently.

Good to know, but useless in his quest to get the gun apart.
 
You can reach in with a pick and push the crane lock forward to unlock it from the ejector rod.

Just out of curiosity, I tried that and found that there is not enough room for a pick to reach in there (something I suspected when I saw that post), and if there was, a pick would not likely be able to push on the slanted portion that lock to get it to move.
Nevertheless, being of the curious type, I took one of my K frames, I found that a utility knife blade (Stanley, etc.) will fit between the crane lock frame and the ejector rod. When it is pushed in at 90 degrees, the blade camed the angled locking pin out of the recess in the ejector rod. It is dependent upon if the rod's angled surface is in position to be accessible to the knife blade.

The first thing that come to my mind is a feeler gauge. Whatever size is thin enough to fit, yet thick enough to move the pin.
 
Well, that worked but I hope he didn't put any burrs on the front locking bolt. If he ever removes that part, he should hit it lightly with a file to remove any burrs.
