Hi;
Can anyone tell me the correct rear sight blade height for a Mdl 27 with a 3 1/2" barrel? I think my gun has had a new barrel installed, but the rear sight blade is too short.
Thanks.

Doug.

Smith offers three hights of rear sight blades. They do this because there is no correct hight for everyone, every load and every barrel length.

Bullet weight, velocity and your grip (ability to control muzzle rise) will determine which hight sight blade you need. If the one you have is a little to short get a competant gunsmith to change it for the next higher one. If it is much to short have the highest one installed.

Dave T got it. They are available in several places. Lat time I looked, Brownell's has them. Numrich too. Smith & Wesson of course. You can get them with or without the white outline.

Dave's also right about the gunsmith. They can be a bit tricky due to the ball detent for the click adjustment. Not a straightforward swap. It's doable for the homesmith, but if you mess it up, you'll just pay twice. This is covered in Kuhnhausen's book on the Smith revolvers.

Its necessary to break the adjustment screw in the old blade to remove it. ( its made to do this) Once the new screw and blade are in place, the end of the screw must be staked to keep the nut from backing off. The trick is to get the nut tight enough to prevent movement of the blade without getting it too tight as to make sight adjustments stiff.
The replacement blade kit includes the blade, a new screw and nut along with full instructions.
