Smith M64-4...2 Inch

A dealer friend of mine, showed me a new acquisition today. M64-4 snubby that is marked "Detroit Police 27XXX" on backstrap. It looks like it's never been fired. I can't find any wear on it whatsoever. It's in the original box (side panel marked with the DPD serial number) with all papers and unopened package with tools. He said I could have it for $280.00 plus tax. From what I've seen on Gunsamerica and other places, this seems like a good price!

Decent price
Could well be unfired except for the factory.
As in, bought by the department but not issued.

I would try to get him down a bit tho because of the police markings. Not likely they would add to the collectability of the gun and would be a turn off to many.

I agree with trying to go lower. I picked up about 4 months ago a 3" M65 with MASS STATE POLICE on the backstrap for $200. It was used but clean and the dealer had a problem selling it due to the markings. An old pair of Pachmayr compacts solved that problem.

In most cases police markings do reduce the value a bit. The asking price in this case is in the ballpark, IMHO, although I would still try to get him down to $225. Are you investing or shooting? If shooting, why care if it's brand new?

I'm getting it because of the markings. Being a member of the Law Enforcement community myself, these hold a certain interest for me.
I've known and dealt with this dealer for ten years, and have never lost money on a transaction. These small businesses are becoming harder and harder to find, so I cherish the ones I patronize.

Price seems OK. Maybe a little high, but certainly not bad.

If it fits your nitch and if you and your dealer friend are happy, drop the cash, take the gun, and enjoy. :D

hmm

Does it have a gold trigger? Perhaps it's enscribed with a scene from "Snoopy vs the Red Barron"?

Some people are very proud of the guns they want to sell.

Just buy the dang DPD pistol and post pictures we can oooh and aaah over.
