Smith M and P Compact 22

Does anyone own one of these. I picked one up in compact verses full size to let the grand kids plink a little with something other than a single shot revolver. I've shot it off hand and off a rest with Aquila lead and copper bullets and it shoots terrible. Thought it might me me but husband is a good shot and couldn't do any better. No fails to fire or eject. No stove piping. Could it be the ammo? It shoots great out of a 10-22 rifle. Was wondering if cci might do better but with the 22 shortage here the Aquila is about all you can find. Has about 300 rounds through it and has been thoroughly cleaned after every range trip.

Yes maam, I fired numerous types and brands thru a 10/22 and a Winchester 69A they both liked some and didn't others. My Aguila brand shot patterns from Winchester but we're fairly accurate thru my 10//22. Try different stuff.

My buddy and i both have the Compact M&P .22 and although not tack drivers they are good target and plinking pistols at reasonable ranges ( within 25 yards). I do not know the ranges or groups you are shooting but the pistol is quite capable of 2" or less--groups from a rest at twenty five yards using decent ammo. One thing i have found lately with all my .22's is some ammo is a lot better than others. Since we are regulated to taking whatever may be on the dealers shelf it is difficult to buy several different types and find out what your pistol shoots best. I have a large supply of ammunition bought years ago when quality seems to be better and mini mags rule. My .22 pistols that founder on Federal bulk pac will sing on mini mags.
Play with different types of ammo and sit and bag the pistol to see where it actually strikes on the target and then stick with that ammo.

I've only been out about 3 times with it and ranges are around 10-15 feet. I had bought some reselling 4 inch spinners for the grand kids and was lucky to hit one out of five at a very short distance. I've got maybe 100 mini mags from a few years back but kept buying the Aquila when shortage hit as it was only ammo in stores. We probably have 1000 rounds if lucky. I'm not a hoarder and won't buy in frantic but with 12 grand kids a few of shooting age and the rest coming to that stage soon they won't last long. I'll try some of the mini mags off the hand gun rest and see if that makes a difference.

Some folks have as you say "hoarded" ammunition mainly for resale at higher prices, I do not "hoard" ammo but I do try to maintain an adequate supply of all calibers that I normally shoot. I have done this since I was financially able to have more than a brick of shorts on the shelf and until recently it had nothing to do with ammo shortages. Another thing, although I have a good supply of .22 when the "shortage" was at it's peak I donated many bricks to hunter safety and Boy Scouts to help keep their programs afloat. I do not sell any of my stash but have shared a bunch with others. End of rant....
As for the M&P .22there is no reason the pistol would not print small enough to hit your targets at fifteen feet. Sight your pistol in from a rest at about twenty five feet and you should be good to go. I shot mine today off hand at twenty five yards and knocked soda cans all over the place....and that was with Revalation ammo which if i remember correctly came from Western Auto about forty years ago. The pistol ate it without a failure.
Good luck

My experience is that the Aguila ammo quality has dropped off recently. For a while they were one brand that was shipping while others seemed not.

I thought it was accurate and good quality when in the yellow box. The new white box seems to have fallen down in accuracy and other issues.

Hopefully they correct this

Good luck

I try to buy federal automatch when ever I can find it for consistent quality and have been pretty happy using it out of my m&p 22 c. However using Remington golden bullets groups more than triple in size. My wife finds similar results out of the browning buckmark, near tack driver with the automatch and just not with other bulk brands.

Ibmikey I done the same thing when I was able to buy a couple thousand rounds of the Aquila and gave away severa hundred of the mini mags because my cz and ruger where shooting the Aquila better. Now I'm finding the same thing. Same bullet different wrapper and the cz hates them although an old single six and the 10-22 do ok. The compact sure doesn't group with them. Picked up about 200 mini mags to go back out and try again.

I bought a couple of cases of Aguila from the CMP just before the "insanity" hit, although i have not shot a lot of it three bricks went to Boy Scout camp and the report I received was it held it's own with the ammo they received from their normal sources, i did not ask the brands. I have run a few hundred through my M&P 15-22 and Sig 938-22 and found them to be accurate and totally reliable. The ammo is Aguila Golden Eagle or some such nonesense, they seem to have a few dozen different names for different levels of ammo. I have been shooting other .22 pistols as my sister managed to run off with several of firearms so she can see which she is most comfortable firing so there are no fresh reports on the Smith.
