Smith barrel shortening

I have a perfectly good 586 no dash 4" that I absoulutely love. I would love it even more if it were a 3" round butt gun.

I know C&S does shortening and RB conversions, but is there anyone else that does a good job for a good price? I know it wont be cheap, but I would much rather pay a premium for the craftsmanship vs paying for the name...

You might check out the American Pistolsmith Guild site.

The name that popped into my mind at first was Jim Stroh of Alpha Precision. But there are more than a few that could do that work well.

The 586 is no longer made. Keeping it stock might enhance its value down the line. Maybe you could find a newer L-frame round butt. That would save you some money otherwise spent on having a square butt trimmed. Smith & Wesson did make some 2 1/2" and 3" RBs in the past.

Honestly, the round butt conversion isnt even a biggie, just the barrel length. This gun will never, ever, ever be sold for any reason, so value isnt a real concern.

Shortening a S&W barrel

"The American Handgunner", fore than a year ago had a feature on a company that made/modified guns so they had interchangable barrels. I don't know anything about them.
www.americanhandgunner.com
might have this information.

Doesn't the Smith custom shop offer this? I think DHart mentioned that in one of his posts.

I've got a 6-inch 586 that would be perfect as a three-incher.

I have a 4" 686 at Smith right now having a 3" barrell installed, and a 7 round cylinder installed. I asked about the rb conversion and was told they wound,nt do it. That did,nt bother me as I have a nice set of Hogue grips waiting for her as soon as she comes home. :)

If you dont mind me asking, what did the 3" bbl install run you? I have no interest in the 7 shot cylinder, but the 3" bbl does intrigue me to a great degree.

Barrell swap with shipping was $189.00. My gun was stainless and they had 2 three inch barrells left. If you get customer service they will tell you they don,t have any. I use Vito and he can usally scare you up one, only he is on vacation this week in Kalifornia. I got mine back yesterday and she looks and performs sweet. The seven shot cylinder is tougher then the six according to Vito.

3 inch

I'm a big fan of a 3 inch revolver. just seems to fit nicely and full length ejection rod. (good and bad on the ejection rod..the shorter rods are less prone to jam a case under the star...but also do not provide full case ejection for magnum cases)...wish S&W made a good 3 inch 357...their custom shop has made a few on customer guns, but tell me they will not be doing that in the future. fortunately, some fine pistolsmiths can handle it easily...alex hamilton at ten ring precision is a good guy to contact about such work. ( he has a web site)
