Can anybody out there tell me when my Smith and Wesson trail boss was made? serial # RSR96xx. and also can you tell me what RSR means. I've been reading a lot of blogs and there seems to be something special about RSR. I think I read that there were only 500 made.

RSR is a wholesale distributor of sporting goods, firearms included, and often contracts with gun makers for an item that is a little different. There has been little collector interest in most special runs unless a very unique item, many of these special runs have been done through the years. Shoot and enjoy your Smith.

.

RSR is similar to Lipsey's & Davidson's, in that they all contract with various gun manufacturers for a special run made to their druthers.

IIRC, a minimum order for a special run is 500 units, but occasionally a larger run is ordered.

No, based on the serial number, I can't tell you what year it was made....

I have a model 629-5 Trail Boss 3" Magna Ported gun ....with a serial number around 9500 and it was made between 1997 and 2001....so go by the engineering dash number to approximate a date of mfg.

But the designation of "Trail Boss" ...that is engraved on the right side of my gun...was done on more than one enginerring revision of the model 629's...

In a 3" barrel, mine is a fun gun to shoot....but a little bit of a "beast" in terms of muzzle jump....vs the longer barreled versions ( I have a model 629 and 29's in 4", 6" and 8 3/8" barrels as well )...and a model like the 629 DX in 8 3/8" is pretty easy to shoot / where the 3" ..is a little tougher. But I like shooting the 3" in "tactical drills" once in a while ...out of a holster..and reloading..etc....

Here are some of my S&W .44 mag's .....
