Smith and Wesson model 69

I caught a blerb about this new offering on youtube and later an article in Guns and Ammo and it sounds pretty good. My plan was to get a older Model 29 off Gunbroker but I think I'm going to wait for this new 5 shot L-frame from S&W.

What do you guys think?

I've got mine... Now I suppose that I'm going to get a picture or two together.

I'm very enamored with the L Frame 44 Specials - REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want the 3" barrel configuration. I figured that this iteration is the start of another try at that.

I don't EVER jump on a new gun release - this is the first time I had to have one right away. I wasn't disappointed with the appearance, performance or craftsmanship.

The trigger is good - I haven't measured the pull yet - double action and single. What you would expect from a new production gun.

The forcing cone is much beefier than the 696 and the yoke locks up with a ball detent that "appears" more rugged - only time will tell. Should be fine as far as I can see.

The exterior is bead blasted stainless steel, which I don't care for - it makes the gun look like it is aluminum - and the sights, trigger, hammer and all internal parts are black. It has the half lug barrel profile - which I wished they would have kept the full lug - full power 44 mag loads are punishing. Medium range 44 mag and 44 special are lovely to shoot. Very accurate - better than I can shoot anymore.

The gun falls into the hiking / woods category with the 4 1/4" barrel length. I'm looking forward to see if they will do shorter versions. If they do they will have a winner! This one is a keeper as well.

I'll post pictures later tonight.

If they made it in the same configuration as my Lframe .44 spec. I'd line up. Stainless would be nice since my aluminum Mountain Lite weighs like 18 oz.

I had a 696, and my experience was that it really didn't like heavier loads. It was very inconsistent with 240gr loadings, and it seemed to group best with 185gr stuff. That turned me off, and I ended up selling it.

I have not had the chance to shoot the 69 yet. The forcing cone is thicker than the 696, but I still worry about long-term durability with Magnums.

And that is why I want one to shoot specials out of since I cant find a 696.
