Smith and Wesson Model 620

For anyone interested in the slightest bit about the model 620 here is a little information that S&W gave me.

Here are the questions i asked

What letter designation does the frame on this model have?
What's the advantages of having the two piece barrel construction?
How is it more heavy duty?
What else is different on the model 620 over the model 66?
Does it have an internal lock?

And here are the answers that smith gave me several hours later (i appreciated the quick response btw)

Hi,
That would be a L frame round butt revolver.
The two piece barrel is a stronger design.
That is basically the change. Yes the revolver does have the internal lock

thanks

I like the idea that it is a stronger frame then the old model 66 and i love the looks of the old model 66... If i can get around the looks of that internal lock, do you all think it is a safe bet to get a brand new design or should i go with something more tried and true?

Thanks

You got an answer from the nice lady, Kate Freddette. She's a customer relations type not a shop person. Her answer was predictably generic. But she is very helpful (she once had a S&W director call me to answer my questions about "the agreement").

The 620 is just a 66 that grew up to a slightly lighter bro of the 686. If we chopped the 686 underlug and slimmed it down a little bit I would imagine that we will have a 620.

The two piece barrel has been on each and every 500 Magnum. Without looking to double check, IIRC, the operating pressure for that round is in the neighborhood of 60K psi.

I think the issue if you were a traditional K frame person will be the slight increase in cylinder girth of the 620 over the 66. I too like that svelte K frame cylinder size.

686 it is.

I took a look at a new 686 with a 4 inch barrel today at the local gun shop and WOW is that a nice gun. What a lock up! It does have the internal lock though (can't have it all i guess) but i can get over that. I figure i am gonna go with that. Thanks everyone for all the information. I appreciate it.

Also does anyone know any good online source for .357 mag ammo? the selection that my local gun shop has is very limited. I am specifically looking for 125 grain self defense stuff and 125 grain practice stuff.

The M620 is nothing more than the M686 without the full lugged barrel. So if you like the M686 then the M620 should be a tad lighter.
