Smith and Wesson Model 60

I have a good opportunity to buy a brand new Smith and Wesson model 60 at a local gun shop. It's a 38/357 with a 3 inch barrel. Price is $650.00. Anyone bought a new Smith revolver lately? Most of my shooting buddies swear by them. I have owned a Ruger SP101 but I have never owned a Smith. Let me know what you think. Im not trying to turn this into a Smith vs. Ruger war I just want to know what the quality is right now at Smith and Wesson. Also if you have had experience with this particular revolver let me know what you think good or bad. Thanks

5 years old... never a problem.

Mine is not a 3". I carry it all the time. It is my EDC. The steel frame eats up a lot of the 357 mag energy if you are inclined to use them.
 
The 3" 60 is the next gun on my list of wants. I've not bought a new S&W handgun in about 25 years. I have bought a couple of their rifles which are outstanding. It is a company with a reputation for good service (much like Ruger). Ideally, it'd be nice to see it in person and test the trigger before buying. But I think you'll be happy!
 
I also have the 2" model,which is a great revolver, but I wish I had given it more thought and bought the 3" as I already have five other 2" snubnose revolvers

I have a model 60 3'' barrel stainless, I changed the grips to pakmayer I know it's mispelled. It gets carried a lot. I normaly load it with a +p round can't remember what in it right now. But it's a sweet pistol. I don't think you'll go wrong with it.
 
A good friend bought a 3" Model 60. I have put a box of .38s through it, it is a very nice revolver. She likes it because, for her, it hit the sweet spot of neither too heavy or too light.

I'll probably buy one for myself, sooner or later.
 
I had a friend that recently bought a no lock 2" mint in the box for $475.

Great gun but sounds high unless 3" is rare. I personally don't see a need for 3" because it won't fit in a pocket. If I'm putting it in a belt holster I prefer 4" and 6 shots, but that's just me.

If it has a lock I'd keep looking no matter what.
 
I've had mine for 30-odd years. It's an older .38 special only revolver and was the revolver I carried in plainclothes assignments until I retired in 2000.

I bet it would be a handful with .357 rounds, and thankfully mine isn't chambered for that round, or I might be tempted to try. As it is, I don't even like shooting +P ammo in it, much preferring standard pressure rounds in the old revolver.
 
Dude get the 60!!! I picked up mine at a LGS and it's now my new nightstand gun, replacing the Colt Trooper MKIII.

The SKU 162430 - the 3" with the adjustable sights is pretty appealing to me.

I think they're a a nifty little revolver. bossman, that one you have is is a beauty.
 
For people who have the Model 19 Combat Magnum, I was wondering,

Do you think the Model 60 is closer to the Model 19 than the 686 is?
 
The 3" mod 60 w/adj sights is one of my favorite guns for woods carry. Not too big, not too small. I developed a "38 Magnum" load just for this gun, more than 38+P but a little less than full house 357's which are brutal in a J frame.
Mine is an older model without the fiber optic front sight, thank heaven.....

No. The 19 is built on the larger K frame. The 686 is built on the slightly beefed-up L frame, which has the same grip size.

The Model 60 is a J frame, and is much smaller all around, including the grip.
 
Traded a J frame 3"

For an SP101 with 4" barrel. Personally, I could not shoot well with the Smith. Full house 357 rounds were more than I liked. Nothing against the Smith, just my experience.

The extra inch of barrel length on the Ruger is nice for a truck gun or carry gun while hunting. The Ruger fits me like a glove. Shot the thing last night and put many rounds through it firing double action. The trigger is great, the balance of the gun makes me a better shooter. After I got thru the "new gun jitters" my groups shrunk to 3 inches at 10 yards and it felt really nice. Could never shoot groups like that with the J frame. I ain't no pistolero and am not blaming the gun.
