Smith and Wesson Model 25?

Gents (and Ladies),

This is my first post here and I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. I'm interested in the S&W Model 25 Mountain gun in .45 Colt or .45 ACP, but it only weighs 39.5 ounces. Does anyone own one? Will shooting it constantly (I try to practice at least 150 rounds a week) "loosen" the frame? I really want to try a wheelgun and it seems to fit most of my criteria, but I'm going to have to replace the barrel with a 6 or 6.5 incher without taper, and put some Nill-Griffe grips on. Does a gun that light-weight put up with consistent, demanding use for years on end? Any scoop you could offer would be greatly appreciated...

Welcome to forum Dave!!

I have stainless Mountain Guns in both .45 colt and .45 acp. Great shooters. Either will shoot 3 boxes per week of standard factory loads with ease.

Since you are thinking about adding a longer heavier barrel, I'd sugest you skip the MG and get a nice used model 25-5 or 25-2 dependingon the caliber you choose.

Model 25-5s in .45 colt, similar to this one, are not hard to find on the used market. Prices for nice used ones generally run $400 --> $500.

Model 25-2s in .45 acp are also not hard to find, but the prices are usually about $100 more than a 25-5. If you can live with a stainless .45 acp, the current production 625 is a dandy. Used 625s like this 625-3 of mine can be found in the $450 --> $550 range.

Good Luck...

I own a Smith 625-9 .45 Colt Mountain Gun. It is a wonderful N Frame revolver: exceptionally reliable, durable, accurate, and with obviously excellent quality, fit and finish.

I do not feel that "frame loosening" will be a problem in any S&W 25/625
> Any N Frame will easily accommodate an unlimited diet of .45 ACP rounds, since this is a true low-pressure load.
> Any Mountain Gun can easily handle the .45 Colt -- at standard pressures, not +P loadings. When one gets to the top-end of .45 Colt pressures, with ballistics that rival the .44 magnum, I would NOT use a Smith N Frame; rather, I would stick with any of the Rugers.
