Smith and Wesson model 14-2 serial starts k 271

Are you sure on that info? That serial number would indicate a date of 1956 (which is actually prior to the numerical system of designating the different revolvers), but the 14-2 wasn't introduced until 1961. Does it have a screw at the front of the trigger guard? That screw was dropped starting with the -2.

it's got a 6 inch barrel does that mean I have a K-38 target masterpiece?any more info would be great. Thank you for your time. when the cylinder is out the inside of the frame reads u
4617* ( don't know if I should give out the last #
5 under that

Yes, sounds like that's exactly what it is. The K-38 Target Masterpiece became the Model 14 when Smith switched to the numbered model system in 1957. I gather that the serial number is correct but the 14-2 model designation is not. Yours is (or should be) the so-called "4-screw" type, which has the screw at the front of the trigger guard but not at the top of the side plate (near the rear sight), which would make it a "5-screw". The 5th screw was dropped in 1955.

P.S. If you want to post a picture, you'll need to first upload it to a hosting site (I use Photobucket) and then use that URL. It can't be picked up from your own computer's hard drive.

thanks

i was wondering about that screw near the sight because I didn't have one. Thank you so much you have made my day. Is the gun from 1956? and is it rare? Is it pre 55?

no, the number that starts with u is visible in the yoke cut when the cylinder is out just below the rear of the barrel, the k serial # is under the barrel and on the cylinder

Everything is as it should be. Your gun is from 1956, and it is a 4-screw, which is correct for that year. If it had an additional sideplate screw up near the rear sight, that would make it a "5-screw" model, which would not square with the serial number and year (5-screws were pre-1955).

It's a great gun, and I wish I owned it, but it's not particularly rare.

I have what i thought was a 14-2 (due to designation under the s/n when you open the cylinder .
looks like this
K848***
40F
14-2
I'm curious as to what i have on my hands as from what it appears earlier that 56 predates the numbered designation of 14-2 yet going by the serial chart that would this being from '50. Any help would be much appreciated.
