A friend of mine has the above, but many years ago someone cut down the barrel to 2.5 inches. Looking for the best place to find a replacement barrel in 44 Russian, and wondering if it worth while. Maybe the revolvers value has already been destroyed. I have attached a picture of the revolvers what it is and what it should look like. Thanks

It's not just the barrel, it's the whole front end of the gun that'd have to be replaced, and that will most likely be very difficult to find. A replacement also may not fit well.
I wouldn't bother, I'd leave it as it is.

Yep, you'd need a whole top frame, as they are sometimes called, as the barrel, top strap, and hinge are all one piece.

You'd likely sink more into the gun that what it's ever going to be worth again.

Somebody on the S&W board was showing a pristine .44 topbreak barrel.
The discussion was on how many hundreds of dollars it was worth.

Although I agree with the consensus opinion here, there is another factor to consider: this is a very low demand part here.

Another reason why, unless it was $100 or so, that its not worth doing, is because the factory marked the barrel assemblies up by the ears where it latches. These old S&Ws had a SN on the barrel, top latch, cylinder, usually the ejector, the frame, and one (right) or both of the grip panels. As a collector myself, I always check numbers, just to be safe. Since yours would obviously mismatch after getting a new barrel, it then becomes a mismatched shooter.

Try calling numrich, jack first, popperts, and try posting a want ad on the S&W forum. Maybe you will luck into something on the forum.

In general, it will be a hard part to find, but since no one wants such a barrel either, you could get lucky.
