I love my Smith & Wessons. I own 6 of them.
But the 986 - I don't get the appeal. Revolver ammo has a terminal ballistic advantage because the bullet profile doesn't have to compromise with the necessity to reliably feed. If I'm shooting a revolver, I don't want to give up that advantage.
But . . . when the Zombie Apocalypse comes, it would be nice to have a revolver that shoots the most common ammo of all. There's something to be said for that.
I guess it's a good thing I don't have a particular affinity for the 986 - considering they are currently not legal for sale here in the people's republik of kalifornia.
