Smith and Wesson 3" Trailboss .44 mag.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all I wanted to see if any one owns the firearm in the title, and if you do how do you like it?????

The shop near me has one in the case, unfluted cylinder etc. I find myself strangely drawn to it, I have always wanted a .44 mag snubbie. Two things are keeping me from buying it, the lock on the side plate, although I have two revolvers with it including the 642 I carry just about everyday, and the price $752.

Please dont suggest a ruger I already have a redhawk and a superblackhawk in .44 mag. This time I want a smith.

I did a search on gunbroker and the price is not out of line although it seems like a lot to me.

I keep telling myself that I should hold out for a 4" or a 5" pinned and recessed 29 instead. the problem is that in the last year I have only seen 1 beat up 6" 29 and the shop wanted $450 for it.

So is this new 3" smith a good gun??????

I too am interested to hear people's opinions of this gun. I have had a jones for one for a while, but I didn't think they would be approved for sale in CA ( :( ). I was browsing the list of approved handguns the other day and discovered the Trail Boss was on there. Something about a .44 mag snubbie.

By the way, this is my first post, but I have been lurking for some time. Thanks for the cool website.

Have thought about one too. Just can't get past that lock. I know you don't want to hear the name Ruger but look at the Alaskan 454. Shoots 45LC which is 44mag ballistics with a larger bullet and it's snubbier :D .

Had mine for three years and it has been an outstanding revolver. Note that it is the unfluted model which suits my personal fancy just fine. It has been, and continues to be, a very, very good gun. I recommend it without reservation :)

I also have this gun with an unfluted cylinder. I shoot 44 special most of the time, it sure does have a kick to it with 44 mags. Its one of my favorite guns. As for the lock, I unlocked it and never used it since.

I don't have a Trailboss, but I do have a Lew Horton M29-3 Combat Magnum. Those 3 inchers will stand up and snort with full power loads. I mainly shoot .44 spl level loads in mine. Every now and then I shoot full power loads just to show folks how nasty it can get.

I also have a 3" Trailboss with the unfluted cylinder. I really love this little .44 and carry it often while hiking. I also use it in cooler weather for CCW. It's quite accurate but takes more practice since it really jumps with full power loads and it has a shorter sight radius. This gun is one of my "keepers". It has the lock but I never lock it. If you're worried that it will lock by itself, the lock can be deactivated by grinding off the little ear on the lock "flag" that says locked on it. That little ear goes into a groove in the hammer to lock it up when the flag is raised.
