Smith 940s

Was walking thru the local Gun Shop today, suckin' my thumb and scratchin' my fourth point of contact when I heard the Sirens calling to me. I put my hands over my ears, closed my eyes, fell to the floor and did an impersonation of an DEElioushis Tremons fit. I figured the ambOlance attendants would get me out of there before I bought another pistol. Lo and behold, the gun shop employees had seen that trick used before, they just set me up on the "to buy" bench and gave me a shot of Rye Whiskey and a pen. Soon I was filling out a 4473 for a Smith & Wesson 940 (the one the Sirens was singing about). I paid my money and now I have a three inch barreled 940. I know it uses moon clips, as two came with it in the box. Anybody have any experience with revolvers that shoot 9mm rounds? I got a couple of .45acp Smiths and they are swell, but this is the first dealings with a 9mm. Any info would be appreciated.

BTW-I'm now in a Guns Anomoyous and their twelve step method of buying guns.

Twelve Steps of Guns Anonymous for Buying More Guns.

The Twelve Steps of Gun Owners, Not Anonymous

1. We admitted we were powerless over buying firearms — that our lives have become swell.

2. Came to believe that a no power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity nor would we want it to.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Jeff Cooper and his ilk, as we understand him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves (and our Gun Safe(s)).

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human beings the exact nature of our enjoyment of firearms.

6. We're entirely ready to have God add more of these swell made builders of character to our gun safes.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove anything that could get us introuble with any ABC Agency.

8. I have made a list of all persons I had harmed, and became willing to make additions to that list if necessary and legal..

9. Made direct shots at the enemies of our country wherever possible, except when to do so would injure innocents or others.

10. Continued to take a gun inventory of what we have and what we would like to have and when we were wrong in not having a certin firearm, promptly buy it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our shooting ability with God, as we understood Him, praying only for the ability of His desire and will for us to have the power to carry that out the destruction of our enemies and the enemies of our country and to have the ability to send them straight to hell (buglars, rapist, murders, robbers, terrorist, etc).

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to liberal citizens of this country, and to practice these shooting principles in all our affairs.

So help me God,

Those are great guns. the only problem I know about is the clips bend out of shape fairly easily.

I'd like to find one myself It's be real cool if the made a 6 shot scanadlism model.

I had one and it did not have any extraction problems

I rarely bent a moonclip even when I carry them loose in a pocket

I only sold mine only cause I have this wild hairbrained idea that I want a 642 with a 940 cylinder

S&W 940 and 942

Smith & Wesson did prototype a "Model 942" -- a 9mm Centennial snubbie back around '98/'99 timeframe. It didn't get off the ground for whatever reason.

I'd think that for LEOs this would be almost an ideal BUG. Especially if they used the leaf-spring shell extractors like they did on the 547 instead of requiring moon clips.

"How did a gun with moon clips and short tapered cases have extraction problems?"

Don't know what the mechanics of it was, but 3 of the 6 or 7 940s that I've shot had extraction issues, especially with hotter ammos.

Grab a mic and a large cross section of various ammo and it will soon become clear as to why there was extraction problems. 9mm ammo varies greatly in its tolerances. If you stick with standard pressure ammo, like federal 135gr personal defense, you shouldn't have any problems.

I also know the feeling. I just sold a 940 so I could start saving up for a 340PD. I had the 940 for about 10 years. Nice looking gun and I liked the idea of having a revolver in the same caliber as my pistol but I had extraction problems with it. After firing two cylinders worth, the third cylinder would almost always require a wooden dowel to take the spent cartridges out. I tried all sorts of 9mm ammo, but it invariably would be difficult to extract. I kept it upstrairs for self defense (I live in the country, well, used to anyway. "Progress" has brought the 'burbs my way). Still, if not fired a lot it was a good gun for what it was.

Am curious what a box of 4 moonclips is worth for the 940, I still have two boxes (8 clips) left over.

Also, anyone out there have any experience with Hi-Viz sights? Wonder if they are fragile or not (am leaning towards the 340PD Hi-Viz

I think the extraction problems were limited to the dash-nothing series of 940s? Might be wrong. However, I have never had any hesitation with any type or pressure level of 9x19 in my -1.
