Help answer smith 617 Qs

Does anyone know if a Smith 617 ever came with wood grips with finger grooves? And if this is the serial # (BNT15xx) what year was this one made? Would it be square or round butt. Thanks for the info.

Brian

Anyone...... Bueller..........

The model 617 was made from 1990 through 1996. Stainless steel, 6 shot, 4 or 6 inch barrel (usually but not always with full barrel lug). Square butt with smooth fingergrooved stocks that came in different configurations. The 617-2 had a 10-shot aluminum cylinder, and round butt frame. Aluminum cylinder was not popular and changed to stainless steel in 1997. I don't find BNT listed as a serial number prefix - please check it again.

Not sure if that is the SN or not. It is a 6" all stainless 6 shot model. Not sure if the trigger and hammer are the target model or not. Also not sure if they are the color case hardened variety... Add said new in 99. Who knows when it was actually manufactured...

I think there are a lot of folks here that know plenty about Smiths. I am awed by the expertise that's available on anything that has too do with firearms of all kinds. I see questions of every kind being answered every day. Ask almost anything you can think of and I'll bet someone comes along with an answer.

I do appreciate the information, but I was hoping someone might come along with some more on a busy sunday afternoon....

BTW, I know of a number of late model 617s with 6 shot cylinder and round butt frames. Didn't S&W change to all round butt frames sometime in the late nineties?

I think the above mentioned serial number was made in '93 but I thought I would ask the experts....;)
