Smith 340pd

I have a 342 and around here they are a bit over $500 NIB. Keep your eyes open, they show up used all the time. People buy it, fire it 5 times, then sell it.

342??? I had a 342. You think shooting .38 +P's through an 11 ounce gun is so rough??? I traded my 342 in on a 340. Shooting .357's through a 12 ouncer is downright rough. Rougher than my Desert Eagle .50 or Anaconda .44 Mag.

It's a great gun, though. Extremely comfortable to carry in an ankle holster (mine is a Desantis). And while it kicks a lot with .357's, it is not unbearable (unless we're talking 50-100 rounds). Remember, if that's too much, you can always load down with .38's. Mine is the 340sc, and I can't really tell you what I paid because it was done with a trade (my 342ti plus 200 bucks). They go between 550 and 600, though. Good luck.

It all depends on how much experience you have with revolvers. If you have very little experience with revolvers, then you will probably not like a S&W-340Sc. But if you have a lot of experience with revolvers, then you will probably love the S&W-340Sc. I have a S&W-360Sc, and I love it, and now I want to buy a S&W-340PD. ;)

Which is better: 340PD or 342PD??

I consider myself an experienced wheelgun man and am considering these shoot little/carry a lot Smiths. What do y'all think??

Since you're experienced, get the HAMMERLESS model. Don't know the numbers - just ask for a CENTENNIAL.

Which is better: 340PD or 342PD??

I like the 342PD, because it is so light (10.8 oz.) I can drop it in my pocket every morning and never feel it's either too heavy or too bulky.

I was very surprised by the ease of hitting targets with it, and the lack of any problem with recoil shooting WINClean and RBCD.

A 12 oz. gun (340PD) shooting .357 Magnum? Not for me.

Have carried and shot both 340 and 342 a lot. Got one of each shortly after they hit the market. Aftermarket rubber grips, altho larger, can do wonders for reducing "bite" and subsequently accuracy. Vicious recoil with .357s impairs quick and accurate followup shots. As such, I still often carry 340 with first 3 holes loaded with .38+Ps.

Agree with what prior poster said about some 340s and 342s being fired just 5 times, then sold. If ya can afford it, my suggestion would be to consider takeing the savings, investing it and a little more in the Crimson Trace overmolded grip for a "dream piece" - made to carry AND to shoot.

What my wife really does not need to know is that with sales tax, laser grip and work on S&W's new chitty trigger, about $940 invested in 340PD. However, it's worth every nickel to me as I can often carry it IWB for hours in draw string shorts and almost forget it is there. Ditto with ankle rig with laceup boots in cooler weather. :)

I own the 360SC. Too damn light for anything. I'd recommend the 642 with .38+P (15oz). If you really want .357, get an SP101.

Or, as mentioned, you might be one of those who buys it, shoots 5 rounds, and sells it back to the FFL.

I'll hang on to my 360SC just 'cause every once in a blue moon I go backpacking in the Rockies and every ounce counts.

Good luck.
