Smith 29 problem

Took my 29-3 out the other day and had no problems shooting single action, but on fairly rapid DA I noticed on occasion that the cylinder rotated back words, I've noticed a few of the threads on TFL that mentioned this but couldn't find any threads that said how to correct it. Would appreciate some imput on this one.

A trip back to Smith & Wesson would probably be a good start. Older Model 29's go out of time quickly when heavy Magnum loads are fired thourgh them.

Quickie, before you ship it.
If you are comfortable with pullin the sideplate. Clean thoroughly and lube. Pay particular attention to the cylinder stop and the itty bitty spring that pushes it up.

Might be the problem. If not satisfied, then ship it to it's parents.

I concur with the advice above, and would like to add it might be a good idea to make sure the extractor rod is tight. Lots of things tend to go wrong if it works its way loose.

After taking the the grips off and the screws out of the sideplate rap the sideplate with a wooden dowel over a scrap piece of carpet or such.

Hi, Blackhorse,

Cleaning will not resolve the problem unless you are very lucky. The cylinder stop spring needs to be strengthened and realigned, plus weight removed from the cylinder stop. Since you do not sound like an experienced gunsmith, I would second the advice to send it back to S&W.

BTW, you don't rap the sideplate with a piece of wood. To remove the sideplate screws you first have to remove the grips. Then relieve tension on the mainspring screw before removing the sideplate screws. Note the position of each screw as you remove it. With the grips off and the screws out, hold the gun, sideplate down, over a padded surface, and rap the grip on the top (opposite from the sideplate) with a piece of wood like a hammer handle. The sideplate will fall off.

After making repairs, make sure the hammer safety is back in place correctly, and then replace the sideplate carefully, making sure to engage the undercut at the top of the sideplate. Tap the sideplate lightly to partially seat it, then replace the screws, making sure each goes back where it came from. If anything interferes, STOP. Do not take a chance on warping the sideplate. After the screws are snugged down, screw the mainspring tension screw back in.

Just for mar insurance, I tap the grip frame....part that is covered by the grips.

Note....the sideplate has a little tongue that fits under the frame up by the hammer.......DO NOT try to pry it off. Hook the tongue in place first when puttin the sideplate back.

Best to watch somebody who knows do it the first time.:D

You know, I almost didn't post that 'cause I knew I was forgetting something. I'm at work and didn't have my S&W book handy...I'll learn one day:(
