Smith 19-2 ***Pics Added 56k Beware!***

I ran across a 19-2 today at the pawn shop and was wondering what should know about them. It is $350 in unfired condition with the box and original accessories.

I think I can get it down another $25, but he really isn't budging.
I love the lines of this revolver. There is a modern quality and a classic look all at the same time.

Any comments are welcome.

19-2

What's the address of this pawn shop? ;) Unfired w/box etc. for $350.00 no shipping pr FFL fees? If it's all you say it is and it looks pristine.....BUY IT NOW! These revolvers are getting harder and harder to find and will only go up in price. If you don't buy it soon.....Someone else will, tomorrow! If you walked out of the shop and they didn't budge on price.....they most likely won't. What's that address and phone #? :D

Thanks guys. I bought it today and will post pictures sometime soon. I do have a few questions though--

1) When in single action, it has a very good trigger. There is nodistance to the pull at all, and the hammer falls with a very crisp trigger pull. How are the triggers usually on this revolver? BTW, it has a wide checkered hammer blade and a wide serrated trigger.

2) Should I fire this beauty? I firmly believe that it has never been fired. It has a slight wear ring around the cylinder, but it has no powder residue whatsoever. I gave it a thorough wipedown with a clean white cloth and could ony find some brown grease.

3) One last thing. When I open the cylinder, I can see the serial number, and below that are the letters MOD. Is this a factory modified gun? The trigger is soooooo good, I can't believe that it came from the factory like that.

What do y'all think?

That sounds like the trigger on my 19-4.

In my opinion, shoot it. That's what it was made for.

Write S&W to find out when it was produced. If it's over twenty years old and really is unfired, it might be worth some serious duckies. However, I'd probably shoot it - never was much for buyin' a gun and not shootin' it. From your description, it sounds like it's got the factory target trigger and hammer.

I called S&W customer service and the guy was very helpful. I was afraid that I would have to pay the $30 fee to get a letter of authenticity, but he gave me all the info I needed right there on the phone.

I guess it is nothing really super special besides being a beauty. It is really hard for me to believe that it doesn't have some sort of target trigger installed on it.

Looks like I will fire it this weekend! I am pretty stoked!

Thanks David! One more question guys and gals. I was wondering the date of manufacture for my pistol. I asked the guy from S&W, but he either said 1957 or 1967, but I can't be sure. Which one is it? The S/N is K730XXX.

Thanks for the input.

hehe, now you know why so many of us older fans of the 19-2,19-3 and 19-4 single out these P&R treasures.
P&R is short for pinned and recessed as in the barrel pin and the recessed chambers.

It's also short hand for "excellent trigger".

*sigh* once upon a time, fine triggers were a requirement for factory firearms.
Wrap your hands around an older High Standard some time.

As to fire or not fire, I'd probably fire it.

You done good - now get out there and find another one :D

The Model 19 was introduced in 1955 with the first serial # (260,000) going to Bill Jordan. That would make yours seem to be closer to 1967 than 1957.

In 1959, Smith changed the extractor rod to a left hand thread and in 1961, they eliminated the hole in front of trigger guard. This should help you figure out the manufacture dates. *

By the way, very nice find.

* The above is based on quick Internet research and is always suspect.

Att: squirrelman-

According to the 2nd printing of the book Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson by Supica & Nahas, your S&W model 19 was made in 1967, as the S/N range
ran from K715997 thru K779162. Hope this helps?

Yours does have a target trigger (extra wide) with overtravel stop. This was not the most common of factory options (out of all my Smiths, the only one that has the overtravel stop is my Model 15, and the previous owner removed the stop, a common "gunfighting" modification.)

Nice catch.

Shoot it.

(In shorthand, what you've got there is your basic 4" 19-2 SB/B/TT/TH/TS [or WTS.] Incidentally, one of the last of the 19-2's, since 1967 saw the introduction of the 19-3.)

"The date on the warranty card (in your picture) says 1955."

That's the printing date of the card, when it was last revised.

Things like that can go DECADES without being further revised, and are normally useful only for saying "this item was made after this year," but not useful for pinning it down to a specific year.

Thanks guys for all the info! I was away this weekend and couldn't get on the internet.

I thought this had a special trigger! I shot it this weekend and it shoots great!

I was getting 2 to 2-1/2" groups at 25 yards. The action is silky smooth and the lockup is very tight. I really like the extra fat trigger. It is so comfy.

I am thinking about shooting a doe with it this year! :D
