Small Single stack .40s

I will be passing my CC test this Saturday and filing for my permit. Of course, I have up to 120 days to wait after I file.

My current carry gun is a S&W M&P .40 Full size. I have no problem carrying that size of firearm, and have a reinforced belt to keep everything tight.

I am looking to get a small .40 as a back up gun or for when my attire simply doesn't allow a full size gun.

I have used my Google-fu and all I have seen so far is the S&W Shield, Kahr CM40, and the Kel-Tec P40, which is now out of production (?).

Are there any I am missing? It must be a fairly lightweight gun as well.

Taurus has one. Maybe it is called something like "Model 700"? I owned one and it was reliable, but my freakishly long fingers didn't interact well with it.

I think the Taurus model you are referring to is the Taurus 740 Slim. I'm not sure to the actual size of it but I've seen the 9mm model and it is pretty small. Not sure if it was affected by the latest drop fire issues.

What is the PM40? Is that the all metal model?

You already have a Smith and you know about the Shield 40. If the 40 shoots anything like my 9mm Shield . . it doesn't get any better. Reliable, small and a comfortable carry. A nice single stack.

You are passing your CC test and have up to a 120 day wait? But your already have a "current carry gun"? Did you move in to IL or have a CCW from another state already?

I would try and see if you can shoot any of the smaller guns in .40 before you actually purchase one. I am not recoil shy, but the little guns are hard to control when you can only get 2 fingers on the grip. 9mm has made big strides in terms of ammo effectiveness so don't rule it out. I have a Glock 26 which I shoot just fine. The Glock 27 was a bit snappy for me. I also have a Kahr PM9 which is a great little gun. The PM40 would probably feel like the Glock 27 to me.

If used guns are a possibility, there's the S&W CS40, although it's not exactly a featherweight and finding one may be problematic.

Big fan of the Sig 239, just very glad that Sig didn't listen to all the "experts" on the errornet who think they are so heavy, are so large and only hold eight rounds. ;)

I love the PPS. The way it breaks down, the trigger, the grip, mag release, and as a bonus it's ugly. It can't be perfect, otherwise it'd be a ......

Love my PPS-40!!

I had one of those. It was very well-constructed. It was reliable, ergonomic, and easy to carry. It had three different lengths of magazine grip extension for different carry needs. I absolutely loved the paddle release. Sadly, it was just a little too snappy in .40 S&W and enough that I sold it instead of training around it. There's something about the recoil impulse in .40 that makes it the sharpest of the three most common auto cartridges and I've just never warmed up to it in little polymer guns. Then again, I also keep .38 special in my alloy snubs...

Rinspeed got me wondering though. I'd be curious to try it out in the Sig P239...

To answer your question billy, I live in hellinois.

Have lived here my whole life. I already have a M&P .40 that I will carry most of the time.

The wait period for approval can take a maximum of 120 days in IL.

To the guns, I have my eye on the .40 shield because it is so similar. My only concern is that I have read some posts online about their .40 Shields going kaboom.

I know it is the internet, but it still worries me.

The best available right now is the Kahr PM40, but it is a hand full.

The recoil feels like it is about double that of your M&P40.

Depending on how you intend to carry it, I'd suggest going to a Shield, since it's most similar to your current set up.

If you want pocket carry, Kahr PM40is THE choice. If you're cheap, pick the CM40 (same size).

if you're on Facebook, there's a fairly active Freeport area gun buy/sell group. Just sayin'.

Got a big pile of .40 you're looking to use up? There're a lot more 9mm options in that size range.

I like and sometimes carry .40, but in the really small guns the 9 is going to be more handle-able. The .45 XDS is also fairly tame.
