Small Pistol Ammunition

Kentucky Rifle

I carry one of several pocket pistols occasionally. (Or in addition to a larger cal pistol on my hip.) A Kel-Tec P-32 is my favorite, but I have a NAA Guardian and even a .25 caliber Beretta Jetfire. It seems to me that a hollow point bullet would be the best way to go in any of these small pocket guns. However, there is quite a weight difference in the .25 cal FMJ (50gr.) vs. the HP (35gr.)
I'd like to hear some opinions. Should I load with FMJ or HP?

Thanks,
Will

Mendacity is the system we live in.

I would go with the HP, the FMJ may be like sticking them with a hat pin. :) :)I would not mind less bullet weight for more speed. I go with the light HPs in my .380 just for the higher speed and bigger hole. Would rather have a .380 HP +P than a 9mm or .45 FMJ myself. :) :)

Given the dismal penetration of Hollow pionts, plus the fact that many will not expand properly (or at all), including the increased reliability of ball: No doubt in my mind that FMJ is the best way to go in a sub-9mm round.

I would sell that .25 and get a Kell-Tec. That way you could standardize you ammo, get rid of that dismal caliber ( a .22lr is better!!) and get a slim, small, controllable and accurate little pistola. (It gets better velocity than the gaurdian, Heck of a lot better that the Berreta).

O.k. I re-read your post and found you already have a KILL-tec! Good for you! Now you can sell that .25 and buy that teeny .22Mag NAA mini revolver-stoked with CCI V-max it will give you @1050 fps...not wonderful but great for such a small barrel! ( Just a suggestion :))

How Ironic! Every time I attempt to fix a mistake on my first post I make a bigger Boo-Boo! Sorry about the extra posts, just resubmitted my original Fixer-post and each time I got "CONNECTION TIMMED OUT|" So I resubmitted, and resubmitted...

Izzy,

Been suffering with that myself, site seems a little screwed up at present.

On the caliber issue. The Firearms Tactical Institute recommends FMJ in every handgun caliber upto and including .32ACP, and even if you do go with a JHP in .25ACP they advise strongly against using pre-fragmented ammo such as Magsafe's Defender. On the other hand, Dale Towert's stopping power figures rate the .25ACP as being MOST effective with Magsafe ammo, a somewhat unbelievable 41% probability of a first round stop with a torso hit. Just for a third take on this issue, gangbangers have been getting incredible results with CCI Blazer ammo. Three recent shootings in the same area using Blazers resulted in one shot instant stop and kills. Go figure, it's got me puzzled.

The general feeling is that FMJ is probably preferable for small calibers, due to inadequate penetration with HP ammo in many scenarios.

Someone made a comment that he'd rather have a .380 HP than a .45ACP FMJ, I wonder what planet he's shooting on. :) The .45ACP FMJ has a proven street record, and it's surely much more effective than the .380 in any loading.
