small, medium, or large for sport?

Lots of people have guns with a serious purpose such as hunting or protection. Those aren't what I'm referring to.

For those of you (like me) who own guns that are destined for recreational use only, how does the collection stack up? Bigs? Littles? Mixed?

I've got fairly large hands and have gravitated towards big stuff. The K frame with the slim stocks is difficult for me to hold but I keep it that way for smaller shooters. All the others are big boys. N-frame with fat grips, big Vaquero, Redhawk, Super Redhawk, etc.

I tend towards moderate loads in large frame guns. Strangely enough, they're all 45 caliber. :D

If I like it, I get it, being a collector (OK, accumulator) things such as grip size, barrel/frame angle, etc. don't figure in. My revolvers run the gamut from
Colt New Services and S&W N frames to a Colt Police Positive.

In bore size, I'm a huge fan of medium. I let loose more .38/.357 in revolvers than anything, and it's not a close race. I shoot revolvers in .22LR, .327 Federal, .41 & .44 Mag, but all of those don't make up even 10% of the volume I send down range in .38/.357. And between the two, I'm probably 65/35 in .38 over .357. Or maybe 60/40. Point being that I shoot a lot more .357 Magnum than most big fans of the .38 Special seem likely to do.

In frame size, K-frame is king and everyone else falls short. I enjoy my L-frame, my N-frames, my GP, a Colt KC, a Taurus and a couple Dan Wessons, but nothing on this Earth is ever going to feel and operate quite like a K-frame does. But I will admit with no reservation that .357 Magnum isn't all that enjoyable from a K-frame. For those, the N-frame is the ticket. But the K-frame is heaven in my hands. (and just to add, I have no love and no use for any J-frame, and can't likely be swayed!)

In barrel length, I love the sight radius from a six-inch tube and it feels more right than the others. However, my six-inch 686 feels muzzle heavy to me. A six-inch K-frame is perfection. But I'm intrigued by the idea of an 8 3/8" Model 14, because I think I'll fall in love with it. Four inch revolvers are handy and I shoot them well, and like 'em a lot. But a six-inch (no lug!) barrel seems to be my "Goldilocks" revolver setup. A three inch might have my interest, but only if I were to carry it. And I have no interest in that. Snubbies? Entirely lost on me. No place in my world for snub revolvers. More for you guys, they sure seem popular. I don't want 'em.

I like big bullets and I cannot lie.

I'm not a huge fan of high velocity. Just a heavy bullet galloping downrange seems to work best for me.

I've got 4 .45's and realized I need to get something a little smaller. Looking for a 9mm next.

All of my revolver collection is for recreational use...( although I can carry them, I rarely do ) ..and I have 20 S&W revolvers in K, L and N frame models...

In terms of caliber:

.22 ....all K frames ( 2 guns ) / model 18 & a 617 .../I don't shoot a lot of .22

.357 Mag...( that caliber makes up the majority of my collection - 13 guns ) -- I like the K frame ( model 19's and 66's ) in 2" and 4" / and the L frame model 686's --4" and 6"...but I really prefer the N frames ( model 27's and 28's ). Models 27's in a 4" and 6" are some of the most prized guns in my collection - and I shoot them most every week. I was infatuated with the model 27's - when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's ( my dad had one ) ...and I'm still very fond of the model 27's ...:D

I do reload some .38 spl for the grandkids to shoot / but 90% of my shooting is .357 mag....and I only load the 158 gr JSP bullet for both calibers. I like them with a moderate amount of recoil...but I keep the velocity up. I want it to feel like a .357 Mag ...but not beat my arthritis up in my fingers, hands and wrist.../ I shoot about 180 boxes a year in .357 mag.. and maybe 40 boxes a year in .38 spl is all.

.44 mag... all N frames ( 5 guns ) ...model 29's and 629's ...and I prefer the .44 mag in an 8 3/8" barrel... / these are the only 8 3/8" barrels in my collection ....and I only load a 240gr FMJ bullet for .44 mag - but I keep them at a moderate velocity. I only 20 boxes a year of .44 mag...

....for K and L frames my collection is made up of 2", 3", 4" and 6" barrels...

I've never liked the J frames because they don't fit my big hands...and I don't have any guns chambered in .38 spl only anymore..vs the .357 Mag where I shoot some .38 spl. I don't mess with the other calibers... .41 Mag, .45 acp, 9mm, etc in my revolvers...( I shoot a lot of .45 acp & 9mm in my 1911's )...

I used to shoot .22LR for most shooting but now it's mainly .38 Specials for everything and shotguns instead of RF rifles! With a good scattering of airguns, my .22's might rust! I shoot the .22 WMR in my Single Six.
The WMR is a "real" caliber anyhow!
The .38 is a great old cartrige with over 110 years of service. Improving all the time I might add! I alsoshoot a lot of BP because it makes so much power and accuracy!
I pratically hve the BP range all to myself and they also let me shoot the airguns on that range since i caan shot such long ranges there.

Things are changin Damn that Obama, his chronies, and the Antis!

recreational use only
For me that would be my .22lr's. I don't hunt small game, and I don't rely on them for self defense. shooting paper and cans is pretty recreational.

All the other stuffI have, ( 38 spl, 9mm, 40 S&W, 357mag, 44 mag), is self defense from either bears, mountain lions, badgers, people.
