slugs vs. steel targets

I am in the market for some steel targets for my new 930 SPX. Do I need the rifle grade steel (AR500) or will the AR400 stand up to a slug?

I have no idea, and I hope someone posts soon, because I'd like to buy some steel targets, or make them myself.

How much did yours (or are going to) cost you?

I don't know the grade of steel used on the targets we were shooting. The lead slugs hit hard, but don't do any real damage to the steel. We shot a match where a shot on steel at less than 30 yards with a slug resulted in a DQ. It was a stage where the shooter had to use both slugs and shot, and 8 shooters made the mistake of the wrong ammo on the right target. No one hurt, but the targets had some obvious impressions from the slugs. No dents though. (3/8" plate) Best I can offer though.

The key to minimizing damage and possible dangerous splatter-back is to use bases on the targets only large enough to allow falling easily. Or hang from chains attached to the top of the target so it will swing down easily when struck. e.g. do not weld the chains midway down the target, only at the top. There are many good steels available today. When I manufactured steel targets I used T1A, an impact resistant steel used in mining. I'm not saying that is the only one, it is what I used.

Thanks for the replys. Looks like AR500 is what I need. I am looking to get some pepper poppers looks like I'll be spending some $$. The bummer about shot guns is they put large holes in paper or cardboard targets in short order.
