Slugs Safe to Use in Older 12G.?

Hello all,
I have an old JC Higgens Model 20 12G. pump, 2-3/4" shell of coarse and apparently a full choke fixed barrel. Firearm itself is in superb condition and actually one of the nicest pumps I have ever used in my limited experience. I have read very conflicting things regarding the viability of using any kind of slug in this piece. I know there are variations on the slug/sabot shell design and wonder if anyone has a good informed opinion regarding safety. I may just stick to lead buckshot as the max for this old beast but would sure appreciate some feedback. TY.

I have one of those, exact same, bought new in 1962. I've shot many rifled slugs from it with no problems. It actually is a better shooter thaan an 870 with slug barrel (smoothbore) on it that I have. The rifled slug is built so it will swage through chokes. The hollow base and "rifling" create space for the compressed lead to go.

Those Model 20s may be "old beasts", but if I come across another one or two at decent prices, they'll follow me home.

TY .45 Colt,
My primary concern was the choke. I have read recommendations that slugs should never be fired through a full choke, only imp. cylinder or slug barrel. I agree that those are fine old shotguns. I believe they were made by Hi-Standard for Sears in the late 50's through mid 60's. I have had both a Remington and Mossberg pump and frankly find this JC Higgens has a better action and feel than either of them, light and points fast. The old orange colored stock recoil pad is pretty darn hard though, I think a slip over neoprene recoil pad might be my next purchase for it. Cheers and TY for the feedback.
