Slugs or Buck on Sidesaddle?

Let's say you have a 7+1 shotty with a 6 rd sidesaddle.

Do you leave buck or slugs on the saddle and why?

Slugs have limited utility for HD. My Ss has two anyway, because I like to be prepared for anything....

with my Mossberg 590, I keep 4 Brenneke slugs in the butt stock slots, and Single 0 in the tube. With my 20ga Mossberg 500C, I alternate slugs with #3 buck in the magazine and in the butt cuff holder.

I load my 870 this way. 1 slug, 4 buckshot and 1 bean bag round.

That way the bean bag is first out, then buck etc.

I keep spare rounds on the buttstock. 2 slugs at the very rear. and 4 buck ahead of them.

If I'm in need of a gun and the gauge is available it will ALWAYS be my first choice. If I have to shoot someone the bean bag will stop most people. If it doesn't - then I've shown preclusion in court when I have to follow up with the 00. The slug is for distance if necessary.

I always practice reloading tactically. I can empty the saddle saddle without ever coming off the shoulder and without ever shooting the slug that is in the end of the mag. Practice, practice, practice. (I love the gauge)

My 7+1 is kept loaded, one short, with buck, chamber empty. On the sidesaddle are four buck, primers down and two slug primers up at the front. Simple.

I use light field loads for HD in the sidesaddle and on the buttcuff I have 00 buck for varmits and ferals.

I do have a 7+1, but I download by one, and I keep the chamber empty. My side saddle holds 4 because I didn't want to chop off the fore end on my 870. That leaves me six in the tube and 4 on the side.

I've actually been looking for either some #1 Buck or some #2 shot (hard find) for the initial loads. Right now, I think I only have #6 birdshot as the first two loads. After that, there are four Estate SWAT 00 Buck loads. On the side saddle are two more 00 Buck (red and turned up) and two slugs (green and turned down).

It would have to really be hitting the fan if I ever got to the slugs.

I keep slugs in the first two slots of my side saddle with a "x" marked across the top of the brass. In the gun, I prefer that S&B 00 because of it being unplated and having no wad cup (just that cardboard wafer).

I have a butt cuff on the gun loaded exclusively with buckshot. I keep the gun fully unloaded, since there are chilluns around.

I've also got a bandolier with about 20 rounds of buckshot and 5 slugs.

The 870 stays loaded but uncocked, with 7-1/2 shot in the mag. Sidesaddle holds 00 Buck in case those aren't enough.

You didn't ask, but the fallback is the Kimber with 8 rounds of Hydra-shok.

I keep 4 slugs in the side saddle, 5 #4 buck in my butt cuff shell holder and at least 2 #7 birdshot shells in the mag at all times. I feel that Im covered. :D

I keep five rounds of 00 loaded, chamber empty, three slugs in front of three 00 buck on the side saddle.

I know i would probably never need them, but if you by that logic, i probably would never need five rounds of 00 buck.

If five rounds of 00 buck don't kill it, you shouldn't have made it mad in the first place.

OK, I'll play.

About 4 or 5rds buckshot in the tube, chamber empty. Probably 3 each of slugs and buck in the saddle, similar to several others above. So, you've had 5 1/2 days to read the answers, Skunk, tell us what YOU'RE gonna do? P.S. I know the secret of the 7+1+1 Benelli, do you?

Right now, no safe yet, so I can't stow it loaded. I have it in a locked baggie with 6 shots on the saddle. When I get my safe, will be stowed loaded for HD. I live in a suburban environment and will most likely not need the slugs, but with 6 or 7 shots in the tube, 4 on the saddle, and 2 slugs, I'm probably covered good.

Suburban environment with thin, crappy walls.

Newer Benellis don't Plus One.

Skunk, please...

...get yourself a safe, man. You got too much nice stuff to take chances. Doesn't have to be gigantic, if space is limited. It's something you won't ever regret investing in, and definitely more important than some upcoming gun purchase that is still in the "I wanna, but don't even know why" stage. BTW, on my older Super 90, years ago I found out by accident that there is beautiful bluing on the receiver, underneath that homely--sorry, TACTICAL--baked on black paint. Loaned the piece to a former friend of mine who decided to try cleaning it the "fast and easy" way--with brake cleaner or some such, just as I got to his house. Boy did he turn ashy when the "finish" started to run off the gun. Thought he was gonna hafta shell out the big bucks! I never really let him monkey with my toys much after that. Back on topic, I make sure the spare shells on cuff are different brands (easy color coding).

Brian D...beat ya to it. I ordered it about 6 weeks ago, takes about 8 weeks for delivery :D I'm going to be a VERY happy boy when it comes in.

I brought my banjo and guitar to the gun store and made sure it fit in the model I wanted.

My Benelli Nova has a 4-round tube and a 4-round baby side saddle. I keep the tube loaded with 00 Buck, and the side saddle holds slugs. I figure that if I still need ammo after four rounds of buckshot, I may need something that can punch through cover.

Also, the Nova has a nifty mag cutoff button in the pump handle...I can always empty the chamber without feeding a new round from the mag, and then just drop a slug round directly into the chamber.
