went shooting today and i was killing my friends new pigeon thrower, it shoots them far, low and slow (easy mode) and i was the most experienced shotgun shooter there.. actually i was almost the Only really experienced shotgun shooter there hahaha

long story short, my buddy dared me to try and hit one with a slug (federal power shocks) we had two left and i actually hit it on my second one. Felt awesome.

so my question is, has anyone ever tried this? iv never really heard of it before but i Know that most of the people on here can do it (im looking at you dude who posted a straight 50 on here) but it looks impressive and i suggest it when trying to show off hahaha

But be careful where you shoot slugs at flying targets, they carry out a lot farther than bird shot.

Yes. If you are shooting at 25* I imagine you have a dangerous range in excess of 1,000 yards+.

There was a very brief incident at Triple-B Clays (back when is was International T&S) where a rookie sheriff's deputy bribed a puller to let him attempt trap shoting with his service pistol while standing on top of the trap house. The major problem was, there's a freeway 350-yards downrange.

Ironically, that portion of the Pomona Fwy (CA-60) is now officially named the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ortiz Memorial Highway (try keying that into your navigator).

i hear you guys about that, we got a small mountain/volcano as a backstop where we shoot and it was definitely still behind my sights when i pulled the trigger.
im a freak when it comes to bullet over travel. i was hunting once and heard a few shots come my way, not close enough to see but close enough to hear the bullet tearing up trees near me. scared the hell out me

Shot slugs and oo buckshot at clays

YES
I have shot clays many a time with rifled slugs and OO buckshot.
It has to be done very safe.
I only do it with my shooting buddies when I shoot on 60 acres of property I own in New York State.
In back of my property my aunt owns 3000 acres and I let her know when we are shooting.
Also their is a mountain so no way the slugs or buckshot will ever leave my property or my aunts.
You have to be very carefull if you do this and know the range of those slugs.
Slugs and buckshot travel ALOT further than birdshot.
Make sure there is a big mountain behind you as a backstop and it will not travel on to some one elses property.
If you cannot have the right backstops mountains etc. DON"T DO IT.

Have never really shot in an area I felt 100% safe enough to shoot a slug up in the air so I have no experience doing so.

I've seen it done with a compound bow   it was on the discovery channel about marksman a while back. It was like a surface to air missile :p

i got one with a 10/22 this weekend, did it twice out of 4 attempts hahaha but i doubt ill be hitting dimes out of the air any time soon

I saw video of people driving golf balls at clays. Nowhere near a 100% hit rate, but it was still pretty impressive.

It's something I'd try if given a safe chance, sadly that hasn't come up yet.

According to Winchester ammo the maximum range of a 12 Ga. Foster slug is a bit under 1100 yards.

A sabot slug pushes that number closer to 3,000 yards.

The shooter has to remember that he/she is responsible for that slug/bullet that they send on it's way. What ever destruction it does when in flight or when it stops falls on the shoulders of the shooter.

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And where did that little 40 grain bullet land?

on the volcano/mountain about a 200yards ahead of me. theres no trees or humans on it, everyone knows thats where everyone goes to shoot

Please note: Hatchers Notebook, page 544 table 3 Maximum ranges. A 22 long rifle 40 grain bullet @ 1145fps will travel 1500 yards or .85 mile.

And the day will come when a shooter will come across Joe,Fred,Bill or someone who is NOT everyone. You are responsible for what you shot into the air.
