Slugging a rifle barrel

Want to slugg a 22lr rifle so I can recrown with Brownells 11degree chamfer tool & piolet. To get the right piolet you have to know the bore size at the muzzle. Instead of pounding lead down the muzzle, I'm thinking of running my cleaning rod with a patch in the bore about 1.5" from the end of the muzzle and pouring candle wax to fill the 1.5" let it cool and get a measurement from that. What do you think. Thanks Chris

That isn't the proper way to slug a barrel but it could work. What is the problem with using lead? Slugging isn't that hard to do and it won't damage the bore if you don't use anything other than a wooden dowel to drive the lead ball through the barrel.

^^ My thoughts, exactly. Anytime you have temperature changes, especially when they result in a transition between solid and fluid states, there will be expansion or contraction. It may be by a negligible amount, but this will mess with your measurment.

Forget the wax. The method you describe works very well, but you need to use something like CerroSafe instead of wax.

you need to use something like CerroSafe
ditto.., i have used CerroSafe many times in the past when i was gunsmithing, mine melts at 158*, if you get in trouble with it, remember, it will melt in hot water, above 160*.

Easiest of all are lead "slider sinkers" for fishing. You know......the ones with the hole in the middle of them. You will want the ones that fit loosely in the bore. Use a hammer and lightly tap on the hole end untill it will not fit in the bore and then drive the sinker into the bore. When close to flush, use a wooden dowel to drive the "slug" in deeper. Once it is all the way in, use the dowel from the other end and drive the slug back out. From there, you can use micrometers to measure the slug diameter.

That's excessively small, are you sure that's the groove diameter and your rifle has an even number of grooves? That would even be pretty small if you accidentally measured the lands.

Scimmia

Scimmia ,Thank you for your follow up. I am going to recrown a CZ 452 22lr , it shoots well, but the muzzle does not look perfectly round and I feel if the crown was better I would get tighter groups. Ordered the crowning tool from Brownells with a piolet of .215 it is to large ordered .213 piolet, should receive it soon. My CZ muzzle looks more like a bee bee gun, oddly enough it shoots pretty good. Hope I don't screw it up by doing this but it's something I want to try. Also ordered 600 lapping compound & brass fitting to lap out any chatter marks. what do you think, Thanks Chris

I have noticed that the bore on my CZ 452 is tight as well. I know this because I have to use a .17 cleaning rod, rather than a .22 rod.

For what its worth, mine shoots AWESOME!!

In fact, now tha you got me talking about it, Im going to take it to the range now. Be back later....
