Slug Changeover for the Mossberg Pumps

Magpul teaches to cycle the round in the chamber out, and surf the round on the loading tray out, losing 2 rounds.

I learned of a way to only lose 1 round.

1. During the initial phase of sliding the pump back, use your thumb and press in on the next shell in the mag tube, then cycle the action fully back ejecting the round in the chamber.
2. Insert slug into chamber
3. (Optional), load 2nd slug in mag tube.

Here's the video on YouTube teaching this: http://youtu.be/gLqHxT-j_RQ

I think with practice you can get up to speed with the Magpul method, and not lose 2 rounds, especially in a gun that doesn't have a high mag capacity.

let me know if this works for you guys.

That method is interesting, and for a mossberg pump could be viable, not so sure about it with an 870 Remington or similar shotgun as they have loading gates and they may interfere with proper operation if not done just right.

Tried it with my 930 and it is doable, but under stress could be easily screwed up and bind the action too, if the loading gate is pushed up too far. Not to mention with an auto you have to hold the bolt back too, which could be problematic.

It seems to be a good solution for the 500/ 590 pump gun user. It takes two hands and puts you is a position where you cannot at least keep one hand on the shotgun in a firm grasp though. Making it not so appealing over all.

Some would look at the dominant trigger hand leaving it's postion as undesireable. If they use thier support hand to load, it has some merit in thier manual of arms.

Don't use my support hand for loading but instead my dominant hand as it gives a more positive feed under stress, IMO. My support hand continues supporting the shotgun and retains it close in to my body. Loading with the support hand is practiced, just isn't preferred. Must also make mention that I don't use side saddles on my shotguns either, but rather buttstock cuffs and this colors my preferences in my own personal manual of arms.

To do a select slug drill, or as you say a slug change over, I load up the magazine tube to it's limit and then cycle up a shell and make sure it is on safe. If I need a slug, then I just feed one in the tube and cycle the action letting the loaded shot shell eject out.

If needing more than one you just feed yet another into the tube bringing it to max capacity. Now just keep feeding the tube one at a time as you use them. This is where support hand loading comes in handy no pun intended.

If I understand what you are doing, it works with an 870. It is more difficult with the Sport fore end than the security, but it works.
