Slug barrel ok?

Hey folks,
My grandfather and I took my 870 out yesterday for the first time and had a blast! It is the HD version (18" fixed Cylinder choke barrel with 2 shot extension). My incredibly stupid question is this, is there any problem firing slugs through it? I've only used sport loads and buckshot and frankly, have no idea whether slugs would be damaging or not. If they are ok to use which ones SHOULD I not buy? This would be for defensive purposes (home or outdoor) in lieu of a rifle or handgun. Many thanks for helping a novice :)

Blackwater OPS,

See you got an 870 MM,
Just picked one up. It's got a bead and copstock folder. Thinking about puting a regular stock on it. I haven't shot it yet, how does cylinder bore pattern for you.

Best -Coop

Any brand of slugs will work in that gun, some will just shoot better than others. Stay away from the "sabot" type as they are designed for rifled barrels and seldom are accurate in a smooth bore

The Standard Remington stock is the best available IMO. I started w/ that went to a folding stock(worst of all), then to a telescopic stock(M4 style, ok but not as good as...) and now I am going back to the original stock. Pattern is great w/ 00 Buck out to 15m, at 7m its one hole. I also have no problem shooting trap with birdshot, and it handles rifled slugs great as well. A fine weapon to be sure.
