Slingshot on an empty chamber

I've heard that dropping the slide hard on an empty 1911 chamber can ruin a good trigger job. I ask because a friend insists that this is an urban legend and does it all the time with his Springfield, with no reported harm. I've done it to my Colts, but only by accident if the slide doesn't lock back after the last round or when the slide slips in my fingers when checking the chamber.

What's the latest opinion(s)?

Thanks

Mac Scott, of Scott McDougal Gunsmiths, and well-known for a variety of services he offers for Colt handguns as well as others, is VERY vocal about this... Don't do it, for the reason that you've stated.

If he says it, it's good enough for me.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Our armorers and knowlegeable pistolsmiths advise us not to do it--I'm not sure how and what it damages but I won't do it intentionally on any of my 1911s. I'll try to find out what this action supposedly does to the gun.
