Slingshot, Bow, Crossbows?

I have been wondering about the use of alternative weapons in guerilla warfare. Wouldn't silent weapons be usefull for warriors in say Bosnia, or other places where an inferior force must fight fight a greatly supperior opponent.

Why are the Palestinians throwing rocks rather than using slings or bows?

"Methinks if a Palestinian appeared with anything but a rock, he'd surely have his place in Paradise."

Damn straight ! LOL :D

a sling rolls up to fit in your pocket, its more concealable than any handgun. Is it possible that the news reports it as rock throwing even when a sling is used so as to make the Isralies look bad when they shoot back?

Lets take a broader look at the idea. Wouldn't sniping with a crossbow, slingshot, sling or other silent weapon improve the snipers chance of getting away alive? Shoot the enemy with your AK at 150 yards or a crossbow at 50 I would think your position would be much more difficult to locate with the crossbow or sling.

Example:

A several soldiers are walking down a side street when suddenly they realize that the soldier who was behind then is lying on the ground with a rock sunk into his head. Where did it come from?

Why don't we hear of people making this kind of attack?

You mean you haven't seen ANY photos of Palestinians with slings?

I've seen scads, mostly youths, but some have been very old men.

The sling can be a very efficient and deadly weapon out to about 25 meters, and can severely injure out to about 100 or so.

Smith & Wesson is dead to me.

If you want a Smith & Wesson, buy USED!

I've seen LOTS of photos, with both slings, and slingshots. I've played with slings, but I'm not very acurrate. A sling shot however, could be deadly. We've killed all kinds of game animals with them, and loaded with good ammo (steel, or lead balls,) instead of just light-weight rocks, they could really hurt something. I agree with Bornman though, I'd rather be sittin' fat on a roof top somewhere pic'in' 'em off, than fighted an up hill battle in the street.

Lots of dead Greek and Roman opponents who could attest to the deadly effect and accuracy of a good slingman.

A sling would probably be a better guerilla weapon than a slingshot. The slingshot requires a distinctive rigid framework, while the sling is simply a pouch and a couple of straps.

As far as the Palestinians, I've seen several males using slings for rock-flinging on CNN. Mostly 20-30 year olds I think.

whatever happened to that favorite biblical assault weapon - the jawbone of an ass?
Probably too hard to conceal.
on the other hand, most of the asses these days are politicians and using their jawbones constantly.

hey, this photo is on ABCnews.com's website!

Methinks if a Palestinian appeared with anything but a rock, he'd surely have his place in Paradise.

Perhaps the reverse, actually. A less effective weapon means you can't defend yourself meaning you'll be sent to Paradise?

Although, I agree that the troops on the recieving end must be hesitant to shoot upon people throwing rocks vs a "fair" shootout between automatic weapons.

The Australians used silenced crossbows to kil Japanese sentries during World War Two. Reportedly they were very effective in instantly and silently killing sentries.

a wrist rocket, with steel ammo, or marbles, or ball bearings, or small round rocks can kill someone at about 20 yards, maybe a little more.
i have done my share of small animal hunting with mine, rabbits, birds, killed a couple snakes and a coyote. the coyote was just a lucky thing, i was walking home and it was in the yard, staring at a cat, so i zapped it thinking i would just run it off, steel shot went into his skull and killed him dead.

not as effective at long ranges as a bow or crossbow, but good for CQB once you get good with one.

There was an industrial plant north of town, it's got a sealed boundary -- no weapons in or out -- anyhoo, rabbits started turning up DOA around the plant.

Plant boss gets worried about this large extinction and contacts the local Fire Department about running a HazMat team out to check the deceased. One of the firemen puts on the moonsuit, shuffles out to the crime scene and gently rolls the corpus delecti into a Ziploc baggie, and we send it off to A&M for analysis.

A&M sends a fax back about a week later stating that "The victim suffered a fatal case of quarternutitis." The Plant Manager freaked out. He was in the process of quarantining the whole site before we managed to point out that a quarter-inch nut is a favorite ammo for a sling-shot. :D

Never did catch the assassin, though...

FWIW, I don't think a bow is all that quiet and I hunt with one. My hunting partner and I have heard each other make kills when we were 200yrds apart in treestands, many times.
I've even seen deer flinch at the release.

Quite effective, lungshots are my personal favorite :D I've killed clean at 52 yrds. but I practice out to 80.

Nukem, you can hear your bow at 200 yards?!
Get some Limb Savers and string silencers.

I usually shoot a Mathews MQ-1,it's whisper quiet and FAST! Yeah, you can hear it close, but most people wouldn't recognize the sound.
The psychological aspect of a modern broadhead tipped arrow coming toward you at 260+ FPS is intimidating, to say the least.

Of course,I'd prefer my AR or my 7 Mag etc. in a dire situation but I certainly wouldn't consider myself unarmed and helpless if I only had one of my bows. Those Muzzys (100 grain broadhead) are "bad to the bone!"
