Slight Issue, AZ gun owners chime in

Well I bought a Mossberg maverick 88, security, 18 1/2 inch barrel 6 shot from a pawn shop for a pretty good price. Well upon a little further inspection, (I know I should have done this at the shop, but I could not pass it up for 120) I noticed the barrel was not the original, it is a 28" Accu-choke, cut down to about 19" with a new bead put on the end.
Does anyone know if this is legal or not?

How are you measuring it?

Put something down the bore (dowel, skinny measuring tape, whatever) and measure it that way.

You also need an overall length of 26".

It's more of a matter of federal law than state law as well.

It sounds like you are ok lengthwise, but don't hunt with it w/o a plug in mag. Only 2 allowed in mag, but you probably won't hunt with that barrel anyway.

With a measuring tape its 19 1/4 inches from reciever. Yeah it seems to be okay, I was just scratchin my head for a few minutes with why the barrel was stamped 28". And yeah, I took the plug out, but I kept it. I looked it up though and it said even an unsharpened pencil will work. It will probably be seeing small/mid game hunting in the desert, but recreational/casual only, as its probably going to get a pistol grip and top folding stock so it can ride around in my yota with me easily.

use a 1/2" dowel rod, down the barrel ...

(from muzzle) and rest against the breach face. Mark rod at muzzle, then withdraw and measure. That' the correct way.
Also use narrow tape measure down the barrel.

o to gunbroker and see if any 88 barrels are listed.

GCA 68" specifies shotguns need a 18" barrel and OAL of 26" for legal.

the measuring means above are correct but the round count is incorrect. You can hunt small game and non migratory birds in AZ with 5 rounds. Check the AZGF regulations. I know this caught me off guard but one of the fellow members on a forum pointed it out to me and I checked the regs. Sure enough for a few years now we have been allowed 5 rounds.

6X6, Your law allows you to have 5+1 Btw... And for federal waterfowl or Migratory birds it would be the 2+1 that the plug limits you to.

pencil trick

I saw a game warden force shells into a pump until the pencil warped and broke. Then he issued a ticket.

Sounds like the jerk was intent on giving a citation for something. May be reason enough to only use 1/2" or bigger dowel so they can't break it by forcing shells in.
