Slide Stop engages in Hi-power. Ammo in gun

The slide stop engages every couple hundered rounds when there is still ammo in the mag. No wear seen in guide rod or slide stop. No specific mag or number of rounds in mag. I talked to two other Hi-power owners and they say it has happened to them. That is unacceptable. I have specificly looked at the position of my hands/fingers to ensure I have not hit the slide stop and am confident I have not.
I'm almost ready to take the pistol skeet shooting, If you know what I mean.

I can't believe I am admitting this but I had the same problem for awhile and it turned out that I was reassembling the pistol from a field strip with the recoil spring assembly upside down. This was causing the slide release to be extremely loose in the frame and it would engage prematurely. I corrected my mistake and the gun has been flawless since.

Hello. The previous poster may be on to the problem. I've been shooting 1911s and P35s for the past 30 years and while I've had the slidestop lock up prematurely in the 1911, it's never happened in any of the P35s I've shot. IF the recoil spring guide is in upside down, it will soon break as well. Best.

I do install the rod in the correct position. I also forgot to mention that the malfunction happens with a wide variety of ammo.

There is a post in the gunsmithing section regarding a similiar problem with another handgun. It should answer your quesiton.

Several possible causes to your problem.

1. Magazine problem. If it happens with the same magazine all the time, then that's likely the cause.

2. Weak spring on the slide release lever. This is very likely the problem. I had a similar problem with one of my semi-autos some time ago.

3. Slide release lever is too large, and the cartridges are hitting it when the gun recoils.

Start with the spring first.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Thanks guys. As it turns out it was the slide stop pin that the mag follower hits when empty being to long. The rounds rounds were sometimes touching it. Ziped .040 off and whala 347 rounds sans jams. Thanks and good shooting.

My P97 does it every 50 rounds shooting CCI Blazers out of a brand new factory clip. Recoild causes the top round to slide half way out of the clip. When the slide move rearward the round bumps the slide stop. Feeds all brass perfectly.
