slide locks back prematurely on my Kimber

The slide on my Pro Carry will occasionally lock back after the second or third shot out of a full mag. It does this with all of the mags I've tried (all of them Chip McCormicks). Is my gun allergic to McCormick mags or is something wrong with the slide stop? Or is it something else? I could understand it doing this with one or maybe 2 mags, but 4? Help!

First, make sure that you are not accidentally locking the slide back. Keep your thumb down out of the way and see what happens.

If that is not the problem, it could be either the slide stop spring and plunger not working right or the slide stop angle wrong. Or it could be that the internal part of the slide stop is too long and is being contacted by the bullets in the magazine; this is most likely with some handloads or oddly shaped bullets.

My Kimber Compact also would occasionally lock prematurely. The slide stop was being pushed up by the nose of the next bullet. If you are shooting FMJ or copper clad bullets look for the copper markings on the slide stop where it should engage the magazine follower.

Try firing it one-handed. That has happened to me. Only with the extended slide release though. I would accidently push it up with my left hand. That's why I like GI type 1911's. No extras.

I use to do that with my Custom Classic. Check your support hand thumb.

I use to put my support hand thumb on the slide release lever pivot. During cycling, I was pushing the lever up unintentionally. Putting my thumb elsewhere solved that problem.

My vote is on the support hand, but like Bill said check the slide stop for copper markings. I love my Kimber, but the Chip McCormick mags are trash! And that could be the problem.

This is a common problem that Kimber can't seem to remedy. The best solution is to replace the slide stop with a wilson. While you are at it, replace your magazines with wilson's also. It solved all of the problems my Kimber came with.

Sure enough, brass markings on the slide stop. Guess it's time to order some Wilson parts. Where's the cheapest place to get Wilson mags? They're way more expensive than the CMs. I just picked up a new guitar and amp so I'm a little tight on cash.... Thanks for the help guys!
