Slide finish cleaning problem, help needed.

I just purchased this Kimber Compact CDP yesterday (less than $600.00). I’m not sure what this brown stuff on the slide is but I’m hoping someone has an idea on how best to remove it. It has the appearance of surface rust but I just don’t know. It is very light and has not eaten away at the metal. It looks like it may be some sort of chemical reaction from some contaminates that came in touch with the slide. I tried WD40 but that didn’t help.

Any suggestions, thanks.

First of all, WD40 is a for squeaks and a list of other things, IMO, it is not the best option for firearms. There are much better solvents on the market for that. From your picture, it does appear to me to be rust. I would recommend getting some hoppe's 9 or something like that and a brass or bronze brush. Dip your brush in the Hoppe's and scrub the surface of the slide. Don't worry, the brush will not damage your slide! Let us know if that gets rid of it. If so, after you are finished apply a thin coat of a rust inhibitor, such as Rem Oil by wiping all surfaces down with a rag and Rem Oil.

I ended up using some stuff I have had in my garage for the past 15 years. I use to use it on aluminum for polishing. I just used a rag, I was to nervous to use any kind of steel wool. It's called Autosol. This thing looks like new.
