Slick wood grips for S&W J-frame ??

My Smith Model 638 has small stock checkered hard-rubber grips, just a bit too tacky to get out of concealment quickly.

Would anyone care to recommend a good, slick, compact boot grip for a J-frame? Are the ones that S&W sells decent?

Being frugal, a good inexpensive set would be ideal.

Ahrend's manufactures just what you're looking for. Slim boot grips that taper towards the bottom.

Any idea of a web page to look at various grips from Ahrends? I did a search and it just turned up a bunch of discussion about them, no place to actually purchase them...

Thank yew..............

Tamara: Gosh, I sure like your toys!

You might want to respond to another curiosity of mine......

What are the preferred woods especially for handgun grips? I mean what is attractive, yet tough and durable?

Try the PGS Hideout grips from Brownell's. I think "Don't shoot it's me" has a pic posted somewhere on one of her posts. It was only 15.00, and comes with or without fingergrooves. Also, try a gunshow. Our local shows sometimes has an older gent with a slew of J frame grips.

Brownell's carries Ahrend's; that's where mine came from.

I like cocobolo or rosewood on stainless/nickel and walnut or pau ferro on blued.

There are some pics of Ahrend's grips on this site - Don't know aboout availability, as it appears not to have been updated since Feb.

Don Collins has become my favorite gripmaker of late. I have his aged ivory micarta grips on a 640, and a 686 snub. His workmanship is tops, and he has a wide range of prices and materials. Use the search feature on his site - type in J Frame - and see the entire review. The grips Ifound there for the 640 are slim, cover the backstrap, and give almost the full-sized grip of a K Frame. They conceal as well as the laminate factory boots that came on the gun, but extend below the bottom strap, where they are tapered. Very controllable with hot loads -

Jeff,
I would stay away from the S&W factory wood grips. I ordered a set for one of my L frames. The fit and look was bad. Returned them 6 weeks ago, and still havn't received a refund.Called them the other day, and was told that it would be a couple more weeks before they sent my money. Bad fitting grips, had to pay for shipping twice, and a problem getting a refund.
