OK GUYS...
Who makes a slick/short action 12ga. pump that I can teach my wife to use when I'am away?? We live out in the woods and see black bear and two legged critters from time to time. She wants to learn to shoot a pump, but I want one that would be easy for her to rack. What models do you all suggest? THANKS, for your help.

While you are at it, search your head and catalogs for a short-stocked, short barreled (18-20"), 20 gauge pump with a looong magazine (18-20")... a 20-gauge youth-stocked defender.

I keep rattling around for one that would fit my not-so-big wife and am having no joy. My Mossberg 590 Special Purpose is wonderful, but too big for her in every way. She handles it okay, but that isn't good enough for me. I want her comfortable with a defensive shotgun that fits her.

The length of a shell (2 3/4") pretty much defines the length of the stroke of a pump gun.

What you need is a gun with the distance between the forend and the butt to be short enough that she can comfortably reach the forend without stretching out where she wont be as quick or easy on the pump. A light gun will halp a lady, just don't fill it with artillery rounds...

A short stock and a forend that is placed pretty far back helps. Also easy cycling is good. For those things I'd get a used Ithaca Model 37, Featherweight.

I second the Ithica 37.

It's light for an all steel pump shotgun, and it's quite possibly the smoothest pump action out there. It also has the slide release in the best spot on all the pump shotguns I've fired.

However, unless you find a police model, capacity is going to be limited to 4+1 (and you can't install a larger magazine tube), and if the serial number is lower than 855,000, you aren't going to be able to use interchangeable barrels.
