Skunkabilly,

Check out Remingtons 870 Express Youth 20 gauge, 20" barrel, VR, Bead sight, Remchokes.

Wonderful Shotgun. Small enough for shooters of smaller stature, or youths, big enough to do the job. And you can still skeet or hunt with it cause the chokes.

Just sent ours out to George Stringer for a custom extended Mag tube to be made and fitted to it. Still searching for a sidesaddle for it. May have found it, still waiting for a reply about it.

I've heard the 20 ga. described in print as having 2/3 the stopping power of a 12 ga, with 1/2 the recoil. At any rate, I think that if you do your part, it'll do it for HD.

I gotta post in favor of a 20 as well. Sure, I have a 12, and I love its versatility, but when my son started hunting (southern MI is shotgun only), after a few rounds of 00 or slugs out of the 12, he was done and because of that, never really got to know the gun. The Youth 20, he shoots enough to be confident with and enjoy much more. I enjoy taking the kid's gun out too. Since Remington, Mossberg, and Winchester offer youth models, you should be able to find something that works.

Say what? Tacstar sidesaddles for 20 gauge? I E-Mailed Tacstar asking about them and they said "Unfortunately, not available"

Thanks for the link, I found them as you said. Hopefully their real and not a misprint!

If I may stick my large, red nose into this...

The one shot stop rate of a 20 mirrors the 12 gauge. There's so much energy transferred at target the lesser ballistics are meaningless. A 20 will do very well if the shooter is doing his/her job.

I bought this very shotgun for the kids. Note that the shorter stock means a slightly smaller butt, and even with an excellent pad, the kick is not mild with heavy loads. OTOH, 7/8 oz field loads are puppy huggers.

This one has a rifle sighted IC bbl for deer hunting, and accuracy with the Brenneke slug is good. Younger folks with good eyes could easily beat my 3", 50 yards groups. The Remington Slugger goes into less than 4".

Gauge and choke are not relevent at typical HD ranges. Just about any load will give good service in this mission. The #3 buck that seems to be the only size available goes into 24" at 25 yards for me.

The only real advantages the 12 gauge 870 has over the 20 for this mission are ammo and addons. There are so many choices available for the 12, from trap loads and CHEAP ammo to the nigh infinite selecion of stocks.

Anyone with a 20 gauge 870(Or other reliable pump gun) that knows how to use it is very well armed...
