sks won't feed with replacable mag

Got a cheap chinese paratrooper sks to try out and it won't feed from the metal 10 round detachable magazine it came with.

I am considering finding an original magazine (non-detachable) or a tapco 20 round.
I've read that sometimes you have to remove some wood on the original stock to get these mags to fit right. Is that true? Where and how much do you have to take off?

It shoots nice groups at 100 yards when I load them one at a time. Any general advice on feed issues would be appreciated.

Most Magazines require tuning to a specific gun ! ! Yours evidently wasn't tested by whoever built it . Most Companys outsource their Magazines these days .

Aftermarket SKS mags have been an issue for years, although the Tapco ones seem to perform well in most cases. Personally I think the original design is the way to go.

Ok. even more weight to the thought of original mag. sounds good. Define tuning? Bending the feed lips?

The metal mag I have with it will feed only the bullets on the left (i think its left) side of the double stack. It jams every other one. When fully loaded the magazine shows a noticeable outward flex to it as well. Best just toss this metal one away?

Thanks all

I would toss the metal detachable and go back with either the factory fixed magazine or the tapco 20 round magazines. If your rifle accepted the metal detachable, it should accept the tapco mags without modification. I will say from experience that the factory fixed magazine is the most reliable way to feed them.

Something you may want to look at, see if your magazine is cocked to one side of the reciever. If it does not mount flush and sit perfectly straight, this may cause the feed problem you mentioned. You may need to remove a little more wood from the stock to allow your mag to fully seat. Worth checking and can be fixed with a little sand paper.

For the Tapco 20 rounder, you should not have to remove more than a couple millimeters of wood on both sides of the magwell.

Insert a fully loaded mag and see if it fits smoothly, if so try running it without modifying the magwell.

If the mag gets squeezed upon insertion, it's pretty likely to jam during feed, and then you need to remove some wood. When you operate the mag release, the mag should drop out freely.

A mag gets slightly wider when you load it up. Only talking a few millimeters difference, so it does matter. On the other hand, taking off a bit too much wood is not a problem.

ordered an original box mag from gun America. Put it in and it works like a dream. Box mag and stripper clips it is for me.

+2 with what jhenry said.
If it's a 10 round magazine anyway, then you don't lose any capacity by going back to the standard config. And you will probably gain in reliability.
