SKS question

A buddy of mine has an SKS he bought about 4 years ago or so. It is a Chinese SKS that came with a bayonet lug, but no bayonet. I have seen some other models that have the lug machined off, but this one appears to be ready to mount a bayonet.

My question is, is it legal to mount the bayonet on the rifle provided the unit does not have the detachable magazine?

I do not know if the rifle is pre or post ban. I told my buddy now to mount it until we get an answer or opinion from somewhere. Your advice will be appreciated!
 
The lug is ok, but only C & R SKS's, such as Russian and Romanians, can have the bayonet attached.

So far, it is legal to possess the bayonet as long as its not attached.
 
Not allowing bayonets on the Chinese SKSs has drastically reduced drive-by bayonettings. ;)

If the rifle was imported before September of 1994, the bayonet is legal. Anything after this date constitutes a "post-ban" firearm and can not have the bayobet or bayonet lug attached. Anything imported before the 1994 weapons importation ban is wide open for detachable mags, bipods, pistol grips and so on.

The real question is how does one really prove the rifle was a pre-ban import? You could tell by the serial number. I have 2 pre-ban SKS's and the importation date is stamped on the butt of the shoulder stock by the company that sold them.

Don't make fun of the fact that bayonet ban has cut down on crime. When was the last time you heard of a 7-11 being held up at bayonet point? Your government at work. <gag>

In a way, this is funny (not haha, but in a sick kind of way). "My rifle has a bayonet lug.. is it pre or post?" WHO GIVES A %^&#*! Mine has a bayonet lug.. a bayonet, a pistol grip.. a flash suppressor... OH MY... IT'S AN "ASSULT" RILFLE. My rifle hasn't assulted anyone. This is getting so stupid it's almost laughable.
