SKS or SAR

I am totally unfamiliar with military rifles, so am asking for some advice.
I would like to buy my first military rifle to use as an all-around plinker/defense type of gun. I notice that AIM has an SKS for $140, and an AK style SAR for around $300.
Which would be the better deal, or should I get both as funds allow?
The SAR is also offered in .223 at a slightly higher price. Would there be much difference in caliber?
Thanx for the help.

I would strongly suggest both, You don't know when they will dry up and evaporate with the current political climate.
I have both the SK and the SAR and love them both. For the money you can't beat them.
As a matter of fact I have two SKs. One is an original Russian and the second I got through SOG which is a Romainian. The Romainian is a very good accurate shooter, I was impressed. My AK is a Romainian also. I'm pleased with that one also.
Don't want to sound like an advertisement/endorsement for these but they are good rifles ;)
Hope this helps for what its worth :)
Happy Shooting :)

For bash around, beat around gun, I prefer the SKS. Besides being simple and robust, there is no magazine to fumble with and you can get lower to the ground for prone position firing. The savings you realize from going SKS can go towards ammunition and training.

I'd go with the SAR1 or SAR2. With the supposed ban on imported receivers, the SAR has already increased in value. The same gun that sold two months ago for 300 is showing up at gun shows for $450. I have the SAR1 and love it.

Are Bulgarian guns under the new ban too?

To begin your military rifle collection a SKS will do. Get an SKS then move from there.

Get a SAR.. They are much more "fun" :) Besides all that they come with a russian scope rail built in making attaching a scope or Kobra holo sight as easy as buying the mount. These kind of attachments can be put on and taken off without losing the zero (for cleaning etc..) You can buy big mags... the ban will make them more likely to hold thier value.. The SAR's come with at least one 10 round magazine so you can get as low to the ground as you want  They will never jam..ever. They are very short and handy if that is important. Aftermaket stuff is plentiful and will let you fidle if you like. If you get a SKS you can never change the magazines ... if you get a SAR you can leave the 10 rounder in for ever it you want.. ;)

pick the one you like best. I choose a SAR 1 in 7.62 'cause those .30 hit hard and are cheap, cheap cheap to shoot. I also bougt a KOBRA holosight for $160 and it is the s%&t!!!!

I have a couple of SKSs and a couple of SAR-1s. I like them all and think you should get both if you can. I'd stick with the 7.62x39 caliber (rather than the SAR-2 or SAR-3). 30-round magazines are cheap ($10 or so) for the AKs. They are fun to shoot and, as has been mentioned, more evil looking.

I've never been too fond of the SKSs looks, but they work and are cheap. If they cost $300 I wouldn't be much interested. But when you can get two for the price of a cheap AK and have money left over, that's hard to resist. And they do grow on you. I live in California, so no more AKs for me. But I am thinking of picking up another SKS or two before they get banned as well.

Thanx to all for the input! I can see where this may get expensive! I have the funds now for the SKS and 1000 rounds. Sure would like the SAR1 also. Think I'll head up to AIM after work and see what follows me home.
Looking thru their flier I also see the M44,No.4Mk1,8mm Mauser,M-1 Carbine, etc.
Wow, and I thought I had enough things to spend my money on!
When this "bug" bites, do you get over it???
