SKS Open Sights question

I assume Its in Meters not yards on the sights but.......
What does that U mean and is this a bunch of BS or can does anyone in here actually ajust the sights to hit something 300yds away?

I expected my SKS to be able to hit paper at 300yds a few weeks ago and I couldn't put one hole on a 12inch piece of paper with open sights or with a 5x scope. I saw dirt fly up all over the place. I can usually keep my groups within about 5inch at 100yds with this gun with cheap Russian Ammo.

Beleive it or not, SKS can do 1-1.5" at 100 yrds. It trigger control and you need a front sight adjustment tool. I've in the past hit 3" at 200yds; never tried longer than that. Sks has a better reputation in accuracy than the AK. In fact, they were used by both the Russian and Chinese as sniper rifles at one time. You can get better groups if you can lighten the trigger.

I'm new to SKS's too. I purchased a Romanian just a few weeks ago.

The -U- is the 'battle sight zero'
mark. Mine has an -I-.

I'd like to introduce you to a couple of forums where I posted some of the questions that you probably have.

The first one is www.assaultweb.net Click on forums then go to the AKs and SKs board. I have three posts there, A B-Square tool review, a zero ?, and a general info ?'s "tell me about...". You will have to go 20 or so days back. The people here are great they provided some great info and advice and some excellent link.

SodaPop, get one of the front sight tools that Bongos recommended (I like the C-type that adjusts both windage and elevation).

As Sgt. K stated, the "upside-down U" is the Cyrillic letter they use to designate "battle sight". When adjusted properly, this setting will hit point of aim at 300m. With the battle sight, man-sized targets can be engaged from 0-400m without adjusting sights.

This is the way the East Germans sighted in their Karabiner-S. Target was placed at 100m. The rear sight is placed on "3" (this should give the same elevation as the battle sight setting). Point of impact (POI) should be adjusted to 25cm above the point of aim (POA).

Since your range is probably in yards, this is how this translates into English.

Set your sight to the "3". Place your target at 100 YARDS. Adjust the POI to strike 9.8 INCHES above your POA.

You can get pretty close to this by starting out at 25 YARDS. At 25 yards your POI should be 2.1" above the POA.

Remember this is with M-43 (service)ammo. Also remember that your sights will then be calibrated for zero in METERS.

Conversion from yards to meters is fairly simple.
