SKS mag conversion

Has anyone here ever done onr of these mag conversions? I've been reading some different things. These are the conversions where you lose the duck bill. Any general federal laws concerning this? I know there would be a year of research with State and local laws. LOl

Converting a fixed-magazine rifle to a detachable magazine rifle requires compliance with 18 USC 922r. Which means: You will need to have 10 or fewer foreign parts on/in that rifle, before it is reassembled.

Search for "922r" on these forums, for a better understanding.

Several companies make "compliance kits", that give you all (or most) of the U.S. parts needed.

the only conversion I've seen that looks any good uses hacked tapco mags. I guess it works fine but I'd say you'd be better off getting an AK or VZ58.

It is a detachable mag already. And I have 5pts so far from work I.ve done. (stock, gas tube etc.) Iwas looking at the Marcus mag conversion, which is the one with the altered Tapco mags.

If you have the Norinco model that takes standard AK mags ( I believe they are D or M models), then you're ahead of the game.
You don't need to convert anything. Just buy a bunch of used AK mags and find a cheap ammo source.

Happy shooting.

Like Doofus said just get a D or M model Norinco. They are already modified to take the AK mags. A stock sks is best left stock. If you want to add some mag capacity the Tapco 20 round duckbills are your best bet.

At one time, there were some Chinese 20 round magazines that fit into the rifle just like the 10 round box magazine. I had one that worked very well. In fact it made a pretty good forward grip. I haven't seen one in many years, I suppose those that have one are hanging on to it. I sold my SKS stuff a long time ago to a friend that lost their rifle in a house fire.
Best,
Rob

This rifle uses the duckbill mags.
Then technically it doesn't use detachable magazines. It has only had the fixed mag removed so the duck-bill mags will 'work' (I use that term loosely).

A "D" or "M" model was imported and designed to use AK magazines from the factory. No conversion necessary.

I would

A. Put back the original 10-round fixed magazine and run it like it was designed

B. sell it and buy a rifle that was designed to take detachable magazines from the beginning.

I agree, I never liked the duckbill magazines.... kind of useless in a true tactical situation.

I guess I got lucky, I found the last non detachable 20 round mags on the planet a few years back.

you can also buy a tapco 20 round mag and modify it to work with stripper clips and use it like a fixed 20 round. I bought a bubba'd sks from a friend, almost as a favor. it was missing the original 10 round mag so I ordered another but it's not working very well. if I can't make it work I may go that route.
