please help. i was reasembling my yugo sks and the retaining pin wont clip back over the tang for some reason... no its not the saftey thing... it just wont go no mattter how far you depress that spring. any help appreciated

Try snapping the trigger group into place without the stock.

If that works, then find out where the stock is preventing the trigger group from snapping into place.

retaining clip? tang?

Are you talking about the take down latch (#19)/trigger guard latch (#20) and the trigger assembly?

Is the safety in the correct position?

On my norinco sks I have to have the receiver in the stock. Put it on the floor receiver side down and put my weight on the trigger guard in order to lock it into place.

I started laughing when I saw this cause it's under the category of "the art of the rifle" and one of the posts was "whack the crap out of it!". Good luck with your rifle.

Check to see if you forgot to put the safety on (up position). Rack it and then pop the safety up and try to insert again.

I have the same problem with my Yugo. As others have said the safety has to be "on". I then use a Quick Clamp to hold the trigger group down as far as it will go. I then use a hammer and punch to knock it in place. Be sure to use some kind of padding under your punch. The Quick Clamp has padded jaws and can be bought at any home center. Don

Actually I said, "wack the heck out of it"...

and I stand by that.... I have two SKS's and they both take a serious hit to get the trigger guard back...

but then putting 'art of the rifle' and SKS's together is kind of a stretch anyway.

I pad a big C-clamp, like you use for changing disc brake pads, to get the trigger group and receiver together.

Ok, i'll admit my idiocy:
I recently put my sks in a carpet fiber stock. In the end I had to dremel out a good bit to make it fit, but on my first try at "drop in fitting" I tried to whack it together like I usually do and ended up with a nasty, nasty bruise on my hand b/c well, you know, it's Russian--if it doesn't go in the first time, whack it harder!
My advice, now that I know: use the C clamp!

+1 on the safety needing to be on. They just won't go together if you don't have it set right. You really shouldn't ever turn the safety off while the trigger group is out of the rifle. It can get totally out of whack and require a gunsmith to get it back together.

Also you may need to take the stock off the receiver to get it back together. That's straight out of the manual.

If you think that's hard wait until you try to clean the gas tube. :D It can be done but it's hard especially if it's the first time it's been taken apart. It could have been together for decades and getting it apart can be tough. Be sure to check out some instructions on the net before doing that job. And BTW you should really do that job if it hasn't been done lately. Look at the release and see if it has any scratches on it. That's a good way to tell if it's ever been taken apart. It took me forever to finally get mine apart. Some are tougher than others of course.

Also when you do get it apart be sure to take all the pieces apart and clean them while you have it broken down. It can fool you about what does come apart.

I'll admit the C-Clamp is better than bruising your hand... which I've done on occasion, but you know it's not very practical to have to carry a C-Clamp with you out in the 'field'.... for when you have to 'field' strip and clean the rifle... there is a reason it's called 'field striping."
