so as i wait for my AR to arive I have decided that its high time for my sks to get some tlc. I want to sand the stock and refinish it in a gloss mahogany. I also want to duracoat the rest of the gun to a dark grey, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any advice on using duracoat. How hard is it to do, what should i watch out for, do i need to be careful around the adjustable sights, where not to get the coating... things like that.

I sold a friend a couple of sks' one and he refinished one and couldn't get the dust cover back on. he asked me to come over and take a look and it turned out to be that the bake-on finish he used was so thick it was just barely keeping the cover from going back on. a little sanding in two spots is all it took. so keep that in mind if you have any trouble during re-assembly. that's my entire experience with bake-on gun finishes thus far. also, don't cut corners or rush things, take your time. especially during the prep work.

well i started working on the stock today, sanding all of the finish off was alot more work intensive than i thought it would be but i managed. I am taking pictures as i go, to chronicle this experence and show you all how very new i am at actually working on a gun, not just cleaning and bolting on fun parts. Im a bit worried about doing the duracoat but i'll only learn if i try. I am aware that its a cheap gun that was bought in the 90's for less than $100 bucks and that im going to spend almost as much as its worth to make it pretty, but the gun means alot to me and i dont see any reason not to clean it up... hey at least im not just sticking it in a tapco stock and patting my self on the back. wish me luck and ill post the ordeal as i go.

Duracoat is really simple. Just degrease the thing really well before beginning and watch for runs (it's pretty easy to overapply and get a run... in other words, it applies like most kinds of spray paint...).

When done, let it cure for 24 hours at least before messing with it, but the final product usually looks pretty good.
