Size Comparison: CZ97B vs 1911 Gov. ?

How large is the CZ compared to a Government 1911? I'm especially interested in its slide width in contrast with the 1911's, but I wouldn't mind hearing any other comparisons as well.

Thanks.

According to CZ's website the 97 is 8.3 in. long (barrel length 4.8"), 5.9 in. high, 1.4 in. wide and weighs 40 oz. I am having trouble finding a manufacturer of 1911s that has all the stats and I don't own calipers to measure mine (so the one you most want, the width I can't help with) but here is what I have on the typical 1911: Length 8.6" (5" barrel), height 5.1", weight 39 oz. As you can see on other measurements they are close. I know it isn't what you want, but upon handling the CZ97 I'd guess that it is a little wider but it is still comfortable (it has a 10 round double stack mag), it is probably a little bit too big for carry though.

The CZ-97 is definitely wider, by a bit less than 50% than the 1911. This does not make it uncomfortable in my average sized hands.
Where it will make a real difference for me is for carry. The width that is insignificant on the range makes for a brick on my hip.

It is WIDER.

I would compare grip-width to the full-size Beretta 92.

I wanted one too. I really like the CZs, but the .45 model is very large in my hands.

I could easily beleive it is nearly 50% as wide as my 1911s, as stated above.

There is an actual forum for the CZ guys. I just can't remember the address.

Thanks for the replys all. Before I posted I checked out the online info on the CZs, I did read that the CZ97's width was 1.4 inches, but I can't find if that's the slide's width or the gun's width at the widest point (probably somewhere in the grip). The reason I'm asking is that I have a full size 1911, and due to its narrow slide, it's actually fairly comfotable for a CCW, I'm wondering if the 97 would be similar. If the 1.4" measurement is the slide's width, it wouldn't be nearly as comfortable as a 1911. Anyone have a 97B's slide they can measure? I've never had the opportunity to see one, or I'd just check myself. Thanks again for the help.

I found it interesting when reading the CZ97B forum.

Many wished it was a lttle narrower for carry, and there were several questions about some new single-action-only conversion for dedicated Condition 1 carry. All of which make the 1911 so desirable.

I am aware of the different grip design, and the fact that the standard CZ can safely be carried in Condition 1, as well as, the conventional DA/SA method. But the SA-Only conversion is a hot topic over there.

Perhaps they prefer the different extractor or lock-up systems to the 1911. But it sounded to me like they were basicly looking for a pinned-grip 1911.

CZ vs 1911 size for CCW

I have a Wilson 1996A2 and a CZ97B and tell you from experience that comparing measurements of these two pistols is deceiving.

Height CZ 5.9" Wilson 5-3/4"
Overall length CZ 8.3" Wilson 8-5/8"
Width CZ 1.4" Wilson 1-5/16"
Weight CZ 37oz Wilson 38oz

The Wilson feels smaller than the CZ in my hand and in my holster.

Loaded with ammo, the CZ is heavier (10-round mag vs Wilson 8-round mag).

It is much easier for me to carry the Wilson than the CZ. Yet, I find both too heavy and large to carry CCW.

Much rather carry a Kimber Compact CDPII for CCW purposes.

The Compact Kimber is overall smaller and lighter. And, most importantly, it still can belch 230grain lightning and hit a BG within attack distance.
